Free bus travel and a host of extra services are coming to Oxford, thanks to clearer roads of the Temporary Congestion Charge

St Helens Wharf is a two way road. It's just that not much traffic goes south because it's not allowed across the bridge.
The bike symbols are reminders to motorists that cyclists may appear southbound.

Contraflow cycle lanes are covered in LTN 1/20 6.4.21 to 25. This says normally Mandatory (solid) markings should be used. But below 1000 vehicles per day, advisory markings may be used.

... these will now stay and benefit from increased speed and reliability, including:
* Stagecoach 600 connecting Thornhill the hospitals, business parks and Redbridge
* Oxford Bus 500 service between BMW, Oxford Business Park, Cowley and Oxford
* Enhanced 3A between Oxford Science Park and Oxford

Travel groups sign joint letter supporting proposed Oxford congestion charge
Oxford's travel groups sign joint letter supporting charging charging proposals in the city.
We and other #Oxfordshire transport groups are delighted that the Temporary Congestion Charge will start on 29 October.
Several bus routes have already been upgraded in anticipation of the Traffic Filters.

The foot and cycle diversion on the Thames towpath south of #Oxford centre is over and that section of path nicely repaired.
However, **caution** of gravel by the river for a few days.

I personally don't use one, but we are keen to make the streets and pavements inclusive and safe, and there are many problems and barriers. We and our member group Oxford Pedestrians Association @oxfordpedestrians.bsky.social campaign on this basis.

We do, and more. People will be able to park mobility scooters here too.
But the main benefit for people using mobility scooters and other wheeled mobilty aids will be the level crossing of the and removal of the barrier. The kerbs and barrier made it difficult for many.

We understand that the new design will include four parking spaces, for cycles, in the form of two Sheffield stands, and a raised table to improve pedestrian crossings and keep traffic speeds low in this residential street.

Oxford has had congestion problems for years.
In 2015, Labour City Council supported Conservative County Council in launching the traffic filters & core schemes.
In 2022, all parties & Councillors unanimously approved them as part of LTCP.
The solution is clear, regardless of political backsliding.

Sometimes, the solution to so many problems appears so obvious that you've got to question why it's not just implemented anyway.
Oh yeah, the car lobby and their profits. Nevermind.........

No alternatives present here.
Not even from the Citizens' Assembly, which Labour supported to find the answers to Oxfordshire's transport problems.
This recommended:
* A car free city centre
* Bus priority streets
* Congestion Charge on top of Filters, ZEZ and Workplace Parking Levy

At one level, it's a question of ethics.
βyour right to swing your fist ends where my nose begins.β
Not enough people recognise the harms done to others by driving a car. Sometimes this is justified, maybe (although 25% of UK households have no car), many times not.
10.09.2025 18:21 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0
Naturally, Walker didn't say what any 'right approach' would be. Because he, like others does not have any credible alternative to solve the transport problems in and around Oxford.

4) This includes not supporting the policies recommended by the Citizens Assembly, which include a Congestion Charge and a car-free city centre, despite saying they would implement this in their manifesto.

3) Anneliese Dodds MP and others in local Labour, both County and City, have called for action on traffic jams, but not produced any credible alternatives to their own Traffic Filters policy, which they say they don't now support.
10.09.2025 17:09 β π 12 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0
1) Oxford's geography is of road space limited by history. That's why we've had traffic jams for years, as Dodds knows.
2) Public transport services in Oxford are among the best for a city of its size... except for the cars in the way of the buses (see limited road space)

Wildfires in Europe: record burning in Spain and Portugal
Wildfires have scorched southern Europe and new research suggests climate change played a major role.
Meanwhile, Spain and Portugal are on fire capping the worst European wildfire season ever.

Significant
We're guessing this is a pathetic attempt to gather data to feed the IOA/OBAG disinformation machine. When one bus route didn't reach its 'target' they would claim the whole scheme had failed.
A fallacy shown by XKCD:
