Nov. 18, 1775: A force of about 600 patriots led by Andrew Williamson receives word that a larger Tory army is headed to Ninety-Six, the main settlement on the South Carolina frontier. Williamson marches his men there to defend the town. The opposing sides had been observing a truce that broke down.

This is a good thread on the challenges and choices in creating big narratives.

I'm doing this right now on a smaller scale and certainly sympathize with their decision-making, even if I'm ambivalent about the big narrative they put together.

Writing text for my exhibit right now & it is painful when we have to summarize that rich scholarship in a label of thirty words or less and you get no space for nuance or contingency. And how much is being left on the cutting room floor is a tragedy. I sympathize w/Burns et. al. in this task.

I'm also looking out for SC things and at least Charles Town got name checked from time to time which is more than we usually get. We'll see if they really mean it if they mention Thomas Jeremiah in the next episode.

I will, of course, be eager to see how this handles the southern colonies.
