As socialists who study history, we are well aware that these are the same old tactics of “divide and conquer” that the ruling class has employed against the working class for generations. Fascism is not a unique moment in history, but is the logical conclusion of capitalism in crisis. Hitler openly celebrated the way that the United States divided the working class in America by scapegoating Black and Brown bodies. The Third Reich was a direct attempt by a failed state to mimic the American project. Today, the failed US project is attempting to repeat its own legacy of brutality by scapegoating immigrants from Latin America, sending them to concentration camps and by blaming Queer people for the disintegration of the nuclear family, so that white workers do not stop to consider that their family lives and their financial stability have been robbed from them—not by trans teenage girls trying to play sports with their friends or from a migrant worker trying to send money back home. Rather, they have been conned by a group of shareholders who spend their time partying on Epstein Island while the rest of us scrape together enough to pay for the heating bill and pray that we don’t go into debt over a medical emergency. We know that this is why the ruling class are terrified of DEI and “wokeism” and “transgender ideology”—they fear a working class that respects and cares for their neighbors.

It is no secret—indeed, it is well documented—that the will of the people has no bearing on whether legislation will pass in America. The one thing that determines electoral and legislative outcomes is money. We know that those with money—the capitalist class—control the levers of governmental power. They determine what candidates are elected and what policies they pass. They have created a “democracy” for themselves, not for the workers. In the words of Lenin, "Democracy for an insignificant minority, democracy for the rich: this is the democratism of capitalist society." At virtually every level of American government, the ruling class has used their money to make trans people into the target of state violence. Trans Kansas Citians in particular are well aware that the ruling class’ hatred for marginalized people knows no borders. Members of the KCDSA Steering Committee and a large number of our members are trans or gender non-conforming. Shortly after our Kansas-based members received word about the invalidation of their IDs, our Missouri members found out that the MO legislature introduced 3 separate anti-trans bills. We have not forgotten that the testing grounds of German fascism began with the proscription of Queer people and the destruction of LGBTQ+ research at Magnus Hirschfeld’s Institute for Sexual Science in Berlin. We also know that Socialists and Communists were also among the first to be executed by the Nazis. Before fascist extermination, there was fascist legislation.

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly (D) vetoed the bill, not on the grounds that it amounts to state-sanctioned violence and vigilantism against trans Kansans, but because it was “poorly drafted” and would negatively impact the lives of cisgender people. This tepid veto was easily overridden by the Republican-controlled House. Kansas Republicans (like virtually all Republicans in elected office) are enemies of democracy, willing to fight dirty in order to institute the will of their ruling class donors against the democratic will of the people of Kansas. As Isaac Johnson of Trans Lawrence Coalition told a journalist writing for Erin in the Morning, “They’re using very overtly anti-democratic measures to pass all this stuff because they know that it’s unpopular….They have to get through ASAP because they don’t want anyone to talk about it.” Kansas Democrats (like virtually all Democrats in elected office) are structurally incapable of responding to this moment, of becoming a true opposition party. This is because they have no loyalty or accountability to the working class. They serve the same class of donors as the Republicans, because the American system of government was set up so that the wealthy minority can hold the will of the people for ransom.

The Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention and Human Security issued a “Red Flag Alert” due to the increased anti-trans rhetoric and legislation across the nation.  It is in this context that the Kansas state legislature ramped up their years-long crusade to eliminate trans people from society. In order to ram the bill through without pushback, these legislators used an anti-democratic maneuver which is used so often that it has its own name. The “gut and go” maneuver is a tactic in which legislators introduce a bill and then replace its contents through “amendments.” This skirts opportunities for public input and limits other legislators from deliberation. The Republicans then used their super majority to push the bill through as quickly as possible.

Today we mourn the loss of a great community organizer and an icon of the civil rights movement.
Jackson's Rainbow Coalition was one of the few bright spots for left-wing politics in the 1980's and showed that there was an appetite for socialist politics and organizing in the Unites States.
