We saw in the 12-day war that while the US was assisting in the defense of Israel from the beginning, Iran attacked the US only after the US bombed its nuclear facilities.

No, officer, it was self-defense, see.
I was walking with my drunk, beligerent friend, when he says he's gonna smack this brute in front of us.
I knew if that happened, the brute was sure to come swinging for me - so I had no choice.
I stood my ground and shot that brute before things got crazy.
I have a lot of respect - even admiration - for Maddow, but this segment is highly problematic. Israel's role in Trump's decision to launch this war is puzzlingly reduced to a sentence or two, meanwhile Trump's financial ties to UAE is played up. Israel is the prime mover here, no speculation needed

For those who don't know, the 12-day war was almost just as baseless as this war. Netanyahu decided to attack Iran in 2024, and later had his intelligence agencies cook the intelligence to support an attack. See Gerry Shih's important reporting on this:
www.washingtonpost.com/world/2025/0...
Many figures among Iran's leadership think that it should have gotten nukes, but Khamenei was adamantly opposed. The new SL is more likely to be open to the idea. Which makes this whole situation kind of absurd: killing the person blocking nukes in the name of preventing Iran from getting nukes.

Not a single word about international lawβthese attacks are clearly, unambiguously illegal.
Not a single word about sovereigntyβCarneyβs supposed bedrock value, as claimed in Davos.
No concern about Iran being attacked by the US while pursuing diplomacyβas Canada embarks on existential USMCA talks.
Not to mention that the response to the protests initially was non-violent, and only turned violent when the 'protests' turned violent. I have seen videos of rioters shooting and stabbing people, and burning people, buses and businesses, and I also heard that there were beheadings too.

Writing in the FT yesterday, @gideonrachman.bsky.social makes a point that I have been thinking about lately: A military triumph in Iran "could well increase Trump's appetite for risk, raising the possibility of calamity."
Iran may well stand between us and WW III.
www.ft.com/content/73eb...
Nick you know full well (I hope) that Iran has said that it would dilute the 60% enriched uranium it possesses and agree to a JCPOA-like inspections regime as part of a deal. If the issue is simply preventing Iran from getting the bomb, there's no issue. But Israel wants more.
