Speaking to what you said about "it makes me feel like it's helping me," I think one of the bigger concerns with it is that it leads non-coding executives to think they're Coding™ when what they're creating isn't production-quality at all and requires so much cleanup to be quality/stable.

He'd vibe-code prototypes for features and then there'd be this expectation that "you can just drop what I did in there, right?" when the code was like 15,000-line labyrinthine God Class view controllers full of redundant code that spewed pointless logs. It was… deeply frustrating.

At my last job the CTO was super into AI and there was a soft mandate to use it ("or it'll look bad on performance reviews"). Tried using Claude to fix a bug and it just kept breaking things in different ways for like 4 hours. Finally I just fixed it myself in like 20 minutes. AI coding is garbage.

After a few weeks he finally figured out how to get into his car without setting off the alarm I guess, which is good for him because at that point I was thinking of pushing like 3 dozen nails into his tires

At one place I lived at in Queens, this dude's car alarm would go off at ~1AM every night and just keep going for like 2 minutes while he sat there inside it. So I got a high-powered flashlight and every time it went off I opened my window and shined him with it. Soon it'd stop after like 3 seconds.

I started making fun of Chick Tracts and eventually ended up getting like 12,000 unique visits a month somehow, which I was too dumb to ever monetize. Looking back I feel like I missed a huge opportunity. And then I lost the domain after like 10 years due to the registrar fucking things up

I learned PHP/HTML/MySQL in like a week… I had this weird burst where I slept like 6 hours across 6 days and just couldn't stop staying up all night learning shit. Then I built my first website and immediately started doing political writing. This was in 2002, before "blog" was a thing.

Yeah, it opened a lot of doors for me too. Once I realized connections could go both ways I started running a web server and keeping the dialup connected as long as possible. But then I had to keep manually updating my IP address in the DNS whenever I got disconnected lol. Cable made it better.

Same, I had to wait SO LONG between when it came to my friend's town and when it finally came to mine. Meanwhile I had phone lines stretched from my mom's bedroom into mine to plug into the modem, and I had to plead my case for a second phone line so she'd stop getting mad I was on it all the time

Also, our political system is yet another symptom of our broken society. Like, I get it that 60% of eligible voters vote and there's the Electoral College and gerrymandering and etc etc etc powering all this, but that stuff is all a product of a society where everything is done for profit.

it says a lot about us, none of it good, that we chose a leader with not a single redeeming quality: stupid? yup. corrupt? absolutely. dishonest? to his core. violent? maybe the most violent ever. any ability to empathize with people? none. baseline level of regard for human life? not even a skosh.
