βοΈ Stops counties from charging indigent individuals for hygiene products or allowing them to accumulate debt for necessities.
βοΈ Provides debt forgiveness for those burdened with commissary debt from past hygiene purchases.
4/7
π§Ό SB 498 MAKES 4 KEY CHANGES:
βοΈ Guarantees free and consistent access to hygiene products in jails and juvenile detention facilities.
βοΈ Creates a fair indigence standard, defining indigence as having $25 or less in an inmate account for 7 days.
3/7
Everyone deserves access to hygiene products. SB 498, introduced by Senator Becker, is the solution! This bill sets clear statewide standards to guarantee FREE access to basic hygiene essentials for those who need them most.
2/7
Right now, incarcerated folks in CAβs county jails & juvenile detention facilities are often denied access to basic hygiene products like soap, simply because they canβt afford them. Some facilities even withhold hygiene products as punishment or limit who qualifies for free supplies.
