A street scene in the mountain town of Gilgit in Pakistan, with men in traditional attire walking along a pavement lined with small shops. An elderly man in a purple vest and cap leans on a cane, accompanied by another elderly in a coat and a hat, while a younger man in a leather jacket sits nearby. Shop fronts display colorful signs and goods, with the mountain faintly visible in the background. Photo taken by Joseph Olinares Bautista in Gilgit, Pakistan. 2013.
In a bustling street of northern Pakistan, a small van with faded floral designs and patterned curtains is packed with men, one of whom stands at the open back, gripping the frame and peering into the sunlit road ahead. Motorcyclists weave past, faces weathered but alert, wrapped in winter layers. Behind them, children linger near a wall, sharing a quiet moment as sunlight spills across the rough stone buildings and painted shopfronts. The cold November air feels alive with movement and routine. Photo taken by Joseph Olinares Bautista in Gilgit, Pakistan. 2013.
I was cautioned not to wander off far from the hotel. But I did anyway, and saw a bustling town.

Three children stand side by side on a quiet street in Peshawar, Pakistan, in front of shuttered market stalls. A boy on the left carries a heavy sack on his head, his clothes worn and dusty. In the center, a young girl dressed in a turquoise outfit and headscarf holds a small band of red cloth with gentle determination in her eyes. On the right, an older boy in a deep blue coat and cap stands with confidence, his hand tucked into his pocket. Their expressions are calm, watchful, and quietly strong. Photo taken by Joseph Olinares Bautista in 2013.
I burned a big area of the frame here- the sun is always tricky for me. But still a beautiful street portrait, I have to share it. :)

You literally had to ask for directions, struggle with language, and sometimes maps had to be manually drawn on a scrap of paper by helpful strangers. If you didn't find your way and miss the last bus, then you'd have to stay another night. Those days were fun.

I feel lucky to have travelled in an era when Google Maps/Translate and 4G weren't really a thing yet (2000s to early 2010s). Not to say it was better, but the fear of getting lost was more "real"- not figuratively, and not performative.

2. PAKISTAN. Oh, my trip wasn't even half-done yet but was already crying. The experience was just so pure and raw. Didn't want to leave.
3. BERLIN. Bag got stolen, and lost my teddy that I'd traveled with for years.
Drama queen much? LOL.

In your travels, are there places that made you cry? Mine are:
1. SYRIA. Was so moved by the kindness of new friends who woke up early just to see me off at the airport. Started to cry when they thanked me we met. Do I even deserve that? (This is just before civil war broke out.)

Hello, world- again! Am slowly easing back to social media and feeling a bit chatty (in my head) lately. So, my 99-strong followers (LOL) can expect drivels in the coming days, as I struggle to find coherence in expressing my thoughts on various interests. I think I need a beer. :)

I guess it helped that I made it a real priority early on (a clear vision in my head) and things just worked out to make traveling possible. Frugality- where it made sense- also helped. So, it goes with some sacrifice and compromise.
And, oh, merry Christmas! And wishing you a great year ahead! :)

A pedestrian street in Sarajevo on a winter night, its surface wet and glistening from recent melt of snow. The scene is bathed in a moody orange glow from the streetlights, casting long shadows of people walking with umbrellas. Shop windows on either side of the street spill out colorful lights that reflect on the wet and shiny pavement , creating a stark contrast against the dark surroundings. Snow lightly dusts the rooftops,in the distance the street is adorned with festive lights, adding a touch of warmth to the otherwise chilly atmosphere. Photo taken by Joseph Bautista.

Thank you! :) And totally agree about storytelling. So many times I hesitated to share photos I truly love just because of slight "clarity" issue. I let that hold me back instead of focusing on what I wanted to show. But I care less and less about it now, and just let a photo tell the story anyway.

A nighttime scene in Venice, Italy, captures a gondolier guiding a gondola through a narrow, glowing canal. Light spills dramatically from a nearby building, reflecting across the water and casting surreal, rippling patterns. In the distance, figures stand on a small bridge, their silhouettes soft in the haze of a street lamp. Photo taken by Joseph Bautista.

A bustling roadside market at night in Peshawar, Pakistan. A banana vendor in shalwar khameez (traditional men's attire) sits beside his cart, which is lit by a single bulb, casting a warm glow on the fruit and his face. Nearby, small groups of people gather around other stalls, engaged in conversations or making purchases. The blurred motion of passersby carrying goods adds energy to the scene, while the mix of shops and traditional eateries, and modern signs forms the backdrop. Photo taken by Joseph Bautista.

Dressed in a dark uniform and a warm jacket with a fur-lined collar, he holds a rifle casually over one knee, his cap slightly askew as he beams with a smile.
