Have you seen federal troops in your communities even after they're *technically* supposed to be gone?

You can thank @mayorbowser.dc.gov for that.

Swipe through ➑️to learn how DC's local leadership paved the way for indefinite occupation and what that means for DC residents.

Shouldn't our elected officials account for the needs of DC residents?

Text of post on X from @miguelforDC reads:
Last night, as my partner and I walked home, we witnessed a plainly excessive local & federal police operation to apprehend ONE (1) elderly unhoused woman who, as far as we could tell, was doing nothing more than sitting on a stoop.

Not only MPD, but also FBI, USSS, IRS (?!), and of course our favorite mystery personnel in β€œfederal agent” vests.

Neighbors were absolutely panicked. The apprehended woman has been a neighbor for decades. The massive response was terrifying and deeply unnecessary.

We need better leadership on these issues and we need the correct responses to various situations. Police should be involved where a crime has taken place. A phalanx of armed officers to bundle away one elderly woman is not what we mean by public safety.

We should not be arresting our unhoused neighbors. What we're witnessing on our streets is cruel, counterproductive, and unacceptable.

Federal agents should not be patrolling our streets, terrifying our residents, and taking people away. The federal surge needs to end.

Bowser welcomes federal law enforcement presence indefinitely Bowser issued an executive order Tuesday requiring local coordination with federal law enforcementΒ β€œto the maximum extent allowable by law.” The order gives no expiration date.

Mayor Bowser, "shared priorities" with this administration means having masked agents disappear our neighbors in the middle of the night.

It means soldiers with assault rifles in our neighborhoods.

It means arresting children.

These are the priorities of a dictator. DC does not share them.

DC leaders should not be praising federal intrusion that is terrorizing neighbors.

We are asking our leaders to:

1. Denounce the takeover
2. Insist on an end to federal surge
3. Defend residents from abuse by ICE & Police
4. Enforce Sanctuary Values Act."

A modest, targeted cap gains tax on 1% of DC residents would have helped folks make ends meet as other essential programs were slashed in the budget.

We mourn the passing of David Schwartzman, beloved FBC Steering Committee member & lifelong activist for human rights, peace, racial and economic justice.

David was a force to be reckoned with and always, always showed up to fight for liberation.

Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen says he doesn't buy the mayor's argument that hard economics require cutting social service programs. On the Politics Hour, he says it's balancing the budget on the backs of the District's most vulnerable, and "it's not fair."
