As the 9th RDW Conference comes to a close with final remarks led by Celeste Drake, Director General, ILO, we reflect on the insightful presentations and anticipate future research and policy changes in light of the work showcased

In an afternoon session today, Ceri Hughes outlined her paper on activation policies which aim to increase the amount of paid work people do
The paper simulated how time demands vary under different working conditions such as pay and hours
It shows a need for new approaches to promote decent work
Yesterday afternoon, Emma Hughes and Tony Dundon presented “The Organisation of Warehouse Work and Social Dialogue in the UK’s E-Commerce Fulfilment Sector”
This study compared UK SME e-commerce fulfilment centres to the sector-dominating Amazon in terms of work and employment practices

In a final session of the day, Eva Herman presented research on the Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) sector
The sector is key to inclusive labour markets by enabling parents to (re-)enter work
There are similar challenges in areas studied but various campaigning to improve quality of work

This afternoon, Jill Rubery acted as discussant in a special session on the recently published book ‘The Politics of Unpaid Labour’
The session proposed strategies for addressing issues of unpaid labour by rethinking an economic model valuing humanity and equity over exploitation and growth

Precariousness and inequality of labour markets signal an urban crisis
Local level responses are innovative and progressive but it’s unclear what the next growth system should be

WEI PhD student and research at @productivity.bsky.social Michael Francis presented on the gendered impact of COVID-19 on training, wages and key workers in the UK
Initial results show key differences of men and women to available training in Covid with long-term impact on skills training & wages
Disparity across the sector highlights differences in labour relationships established with workers and therefore differing labour contracts and conditions
Ultimately this leads to varying experiences and demands of workers and policy challenges

Following all presentations, session chairs reflected on a regulation from an ILO report that views domestic work as ‘work like any other, work like no other’
Digital labour platforms of domestic/care work adopt different business models to transport/labour implying different labour conditions

Spain unlike Chile classifies these workers as (self-)employed
In Chile, there is limited regulation or backlash for breaches whereas Spain faces continual disputes to regulations

Four speakers presented findings from recent research in Latin America on labour relations to bridge regional and global employment debates 🧐
Day 1, afternoon stream 1 has a variety of talks on topics around legislation, women and gender and platform economies
Case studies in a climate session showed the importance of the worker voice to improve resilience and workplace health and safety, and as a tool in adapting to climate change 🔨☁️

The book will be out in 2026 and contains a collection of papers around gender equality in turbulent times

The National Forum for Health and Wellbeing at Work has put together a major report looking at the impact of AI on health and wellbeing.
The report was launched last week at a special event at the House of Commons attended by business leaders and politicians.
