Struggling with the next editorial. Original idea just didn't pan out and time is running out. Open to suggestions or could just do a Q&A style editorial where the Q's come from here. Those can be fun sometimes. Suggest or ask away. :)

Yea I just mean to say I understand the instinct to do this (and have def written sentences like this myself in trying to produce something new/interesting) so I don’t judge anyone too harshly. Like another poster said, this scenario is what editors are for—totally agree there!

I think there’s a section in Self-Editing for Fiction Writers that suggests this. Something like: the first few words that come to mind will be the first that come to other writers’ minds so try to push past them to create novelty.

It’s so weird being a heritage speaker of a language. I have very high comprehension, but I’m B2 (intermediate) in terms of speaking and whatever level “the Little Prince” is in reading. 🫠 So difficult to explain.

I wrote (and later threw away) a story about a family of magical sisters (I had two brothers lol) when I was maybe 11-12? But my writing was intensely discouraged so I stopped by end of HS and didn’t pick it up again until a few years ago (I’m 35 now).

I would still submit. I don’t check acceptance percentages before submitting anywhere (too taxing on the psyche 😭)

As someone who just began submitting regularly earlier this year, this is completely mind blowing.

I submitted by chance when Strange Horizons opened in Dec 2023 and they held the story for 9 months (no simultaneous submissions) but ultimately rejected it. 🫠 It still hasn’t found home.

Some stories slip out of you like a slow, easy exhale and some stories emerge like jagged breath, like hyperventilating.

Guess which one I’m writing right now!
