Some further diagnostics for you. Do you often see them on the ground? Do you see them wagging/pumping their tails a lot? If yes, that's a good sign for white wagtail.

White wagtails have variable plumage between subspecies, and I don't know enough to know which you might have, but that patch of white on the face with a dark back and an even darker back-to-top of head is pretty distinctive for them. They mostly eat insects and thrive in human-altered environments

hahaha yes when you're dealing with distant blurry pics like this, automatic photo ID is pretty limited! anyway I'm like 90% sure you've got a flock of white wagtails - a eurasian species, but one with a presence in some parts of California, including Long Beach.

North: Gdańsk, Poland
South: somewhere along the south shore of South Africa, further south than Cape of Good Hope, but I don't recall our exact route
East: Taipei, Taiwan
West: on the waters off the west coast of Vancouver Island, Canada

also, are all of these pictures of the same individual bird? it kind of looks to me like you have two different species (or two different plumages of the same species?) in these four pictures, but that might just be about the change in angle from the posture the bird's sitting in

ooh, now that's an intriguing puzzle! Would you mind telling me what approximate area you're in? iirc you live in california, but california's a big state with highly variable ecosystems, so being able to narrow in a bit from there would be helpful in assessing!
