This is the thing thatโs so stupid/horrifying about Big Techโs shiny promises of our โAI future.โ
*If* it works like they promise (and thereโs no evidence it does or ever will), the result will be massive unemployment and conscious human-level intellects treated as slaves.
Who wants that?

While I had the flu, I dreamt I found a piece of paper with a poem that said something like โlie back in the long grass. Look up at the seed heads bobbing in the wind. The shade is cool. If we lie here long enough, we will become one.โ It was written by A. Grass, a hungry grass who wanted fertilizer

BlueSky is one of the worst platforms I have ever dealt with. Within seconds of creating a second account, after my first one was shut down just two days after it was created, my account was closed again. This happened despite the fact that I hadnโt posted anything or followed anyone. I was only in the process of adding a profile photo, yet I received an email claiming that my account was โspamโ and that it was โcausing harm.โ What kind of logic is this?
The painful truth is that the account was shut down the moment it became clear it was created from inside Gaza. It seems we are no longer allowed to write or speak about what is happening to us here. They are not afraid of content itself, but of our voices and the reality we carry with us.
Millions are spent to silence these voices and to erase the truth. I am exhausted by this platform and by how our photos and videos, which document real suffering, are treated as โviolations of community standards,โ as if pain itself has become a crime.
What is happening is not simple moderation or policy enforcement. It is an attempt to erase our existence and bury the truth. And honestly, this is shameful and unbearably painful.
[the original poster has included two screenshots showing the email from bluesky admin informing him that his account has been taken down for being 'spammy, inauthentic or disruptive to users'. it's the standard boilerplate you get when they take moderation action.]

A Bitcoin Blunder for the Ages: $40 Billion Accidentally Given Away
A botched prize giveaway has landed a South Korean cryptocurrency exchange in hot water.
A Korean bitcoin market intended to give away prizes worth โฉ620,000 or about $425. Instead, they gave away 620,000 bitcoins worth roughly $40 BILLION at the timeโdespite not actually holding that many tokens. Itโs a massive failure of crypto safety protocols. Now theyโre asking for the coins back.

Hi everyone. Chris, Jairaj, and I wanted to let you know that we've heard and have been listening to all the views being expressed about how Substack should think about the presence of fringe voices on the platform (and particularly, in this case, Nazi views).
liust want to make it clear that we don't like Nazis either-we wish no-one held those views. But some people do hold those and other extreme views.
Given that, we don't think that censorship (including through demonetizing publications) makes the problem go away- in fact, it makes it worse.
NEW: Substack founders finally respond to Substackers Against Nazis. They say Nazis publishing and earning money on their platform is fine with them.

Epstein and the moral rot of US public intellectuals
The disgraced sex offender was able to gather a group of scientists and thinkers around him who shared his anti-woke, anti-women and Silicon Valley techno-fascist views. But it doesnโt end with Epstei...
There hasn't been much media coverage outside the science media of the Epstein scientists. So I wrote about them here for @thenewworldmag.bsky.social. As many in science know, John Brockman was central in linking Epstein to scientific "public intellectuals".

Ireland announces scheme to provide basic income for artists
The Basic Income for Artists (BIA) project is believed to be the first permanent one of its kind in the world.
After a trial over the last few years, Ireland has launched a permanent scheme giving a basic income of โฌ325 a week for artists.
2,000 will be eligible, and successful recipients will be chosen at random from applicants, who must be "professional artists" (definition tbc).
