Consumers Beware: Recalled Tuna Ends Up Back on Shelves -- FDA Now Warns of Paralysis or Death Consumers across several states are being urged to double-check their pantries after a shipment error put previously recalled tuna back on store shelves. On Friday, January 16, Tri-Union Seafoods confirmed that a third-party distributor mistakenly released “quarantined product” that should never have entered circulation. The affected items were already recalled earlier in 2025 due to a packaging defect tied to the pull tab on certain cans. The products involved include 4-packs of Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil and single cans of Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Extra Virgin Olive Oil with Sea Salt. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the defect can weaken the seal over time, allowing leaks or contamination with clostridium botulinum. The agency warned that the bacteria can cause a “potentially fatal form of food poisoning.” The tuna was distributed to Meijer stores in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Giant Food locations in Maryland and Virginia also received the products, along with Safeway, Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions stores in California. The recalled 4-packs carry UPC 4800073265 with can codes S84N D2L or S84N D3L and best-by dates in January 2028. The single cans have UPC 4800013275, can code S88N D1M, and the same January 2028 best-by date. Officials stressed that consumers should not eat the tuna even if it does not appear spoiled. Shoppers are advised to throw the product away or return it for a full refund. While a broader canned tuna recall in 2025 included multiple brands, this latest distribution error only applies to Genova products.
