When Cecil Harmsworth, MP, newspaper man and member of the Johnson Club, walked through Gough Square in 1911, Dr Johnson’s House was in poor repair and facing an uncertain future. His determination to save and restore it ensured the House survived for future generations.

We remember Samuel Johnson today, who died on this day in 1784 at the age of 75.
Born in Lichfield and long at home in London, he rests in Poets’ Corner beside his friend David Garrick.
The Johnson Society of London continues the tradition of placing a wreath on his grave each year.
