Journalists covering conflict can (often unintentionally) make things worse. But you CAN build deeper connections with those you interview β and even across lines of division.
@write-this-way.bsky.social will teach you how tomorrow. There's still time to sign up:
If you're a climate journalist and feeling overwhelmed, tune in TOMORROW, July 15, for the free virtual C.A.R.E.S. Climate and Mental Health Training. This collab between Metcalf and @soljourno.bsky.social features speakers @yessfun.com and Rebecca Weston.

A good mission statement can be your newsroom's secret weapon.
If you don't tell people why (and how) you report what you report, THEY WILL DECIDE FOR YOU. Let's fix that.
Join @trustingnews.bsky.social, Hearken, and SJN next Wednesday and we'll solve this together.
Couldn't agree more!

More transparency. More solutions. More communities setting the agenda over politicians.
New research shows newsrooms trained by Hearken, @trustingnews.bsky.social, and SJN tell fewer "horse race" stories and more constructive ones.

We're hiring:
Want to help us find, measure, and tell the world about the great solutions journalism impact out there? Well, now you can (among some other research tasks). It all starts with this incredibly detailed post, at which you can also find the application.
We can't wait to hear from you!
CALLING ALL EDUCATORS:
SJN's Train-the-Trainers is the most in-depth solutions journalism training anywhere. And this next round is just for you.
We're looking for journalism school educators interested in (or already) leading solutions journalism trainings in their communities or regions.
Complicating the Narratives in all caps. Below that in smaller font is the date: April 16th. To the right, it reads "Virtual, 1PM EDT" and to the right of that, "Journalists and Educators." At the bottom, it reads, "Revolutionize how you listen."
Usually journalists listen for information. Instead, we must listen to *understand.*
Join journalist and educator Hugo Balta for a virtual introduction to "Complicating the Narratives." It just might change how you source, interview, and report.

Does it have a bad reputation??
It is true that sometimes people believe solutions journalism is "good news" β which it's not. And sometimes other legitimate concerns are raised. Here's a good look from an event we hosted based on some constructive criticism: www.journalism.co.uk/news/the-rol...
Solutions stories donβt celebrate responses to problems, or advocate for specific ones; they cover them, investigating what was done and what the evidence says worked and didnβt work about it, and why. They report on the limitations of a response.

You might be having some ... "difficult" political conversations. Maybe you even cover some hot-button issues as a journalist.

To paraphrase a saying about trees, the best time to cover climate solutions was 10 years ago. The next best time is now.
Justin Cook and @damaso.bsky.social are as good as anyone at climate visuals, and @projectdrawdown.bsky.social is as good at anyone at vetting solutions.
Go to this.
Using Climate Visuals to Tell a More Complex Story
Visual journalists are on the front line of the climate crisis. They are a newsroomβs eyes and ears on the ground, documenting increasingly extreme weather events, disasters, displaced communities and those creating their own solutions. Visual journalism can humanize climate chaos and make complex science relatable.
Two experienced visual journalists teamed up to share approaches theyβve learned to document the climate story holistically, using visuals to deepen understanding rather than just intensifying feeling. This isnβt just about technique β it involves a commitment to ethical behavior and care for the people and places visited.
The more personal the story, the more universal it will be. Make sure to document those stories with trust, sensitivity and reciprocity. Learn more at climateblueprint.org.
For the next few months, weβll periodically share standout insights from the Climate Blueprint for Media Transformation, a collaboration between CCNow and the @soljourno.bsky.social. This is the first! climateblueprint.org/article/visu...

04.03.2025 00:19 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Thanks for including us in this thoughtful thread. It seems that among both climate communicators and journalists, the issue has been an over-reliance on explaining the problem/sounding the alarm, not realizing people also need to deeply understand their options for doing something about it.
