📢 Today's trade hearing on the EU-Mercosur deal features mainly business voices who stand to gain - but what about the voices of animals?

A missed opportunity for a balanced debate on a deal's real impacts - the risk of increased animal suffering through intensified factory farming. #StopEUMercosur

Today I had the opportunity to explain to MEPs why we need to #StopEUMercosur deal:

- it will further fuel animal cruelty 🐔🐮 & antimicrobial resistance 🦠 & deforestation 🔥
- its ‘rebalancing mechanism’ is a threat for future sustainability legislation 🫣

Cheaper imported chicken and beef increasingly seen in UK supermarkets Grocers turning to Australia, Poland and Uruguay for meat, prompting claim they are undermining British farmers

Trade deals undermine #AnimalWelfare standards & fuel factory farming abroad 😱

Great that the upcoming #EndTheCageAge will apply to imports 🥚🐷🐮

But as the EU imports lots chicken meat, new EU law must also require that imports comply with the new density & breeding standards 🐔

This common regulatory framework will ensure that any progress - including the EU ban on cages - applies in the UK 🐔

🙋🐮 European consumers agree that animal food imports should be subject to the same welfare rules as those produced in the EU.

👉The EU's upcoming revision of its #AnimalWelfare legislation is a ✨golden✨ opportunity to ensure this. #StopCruelImports event in Brussels with Federacja Konsumentów today.

Today at the @eurogroupforanimals.org event on trade panelists agreed that the 🇪🇺 market - including consumers, farmers and producers - needs import requirements related to #AnimalWelfare, even more with the controversial #EUMercosur FTA in the pipeline ‼️

For years I've been advocating for tariffs for the protection of legitimate objectives such as #AnimalWelfare.

These "reciprocal" tariffs make no sense: they are based on a simplistic calculation & ignore how trade rules and supply chains work.

They might also backfire and hit the US economy.

I was very happy to present to 🇪🇺 & 🇨🇦 officials why the EU seals regime remains fit for purpose 🦭

The EU seals regime was a big milestone for #AnimalWelfare. Let’s continue discussions on how to better implement it rather than weakening it.

This may have implications for #AnimalWelfare because if the 200% tariffs on 🇪🇺 wine & spirits happen, expect stronger calls in favour of trade agreements, including with #Mercosur and 🇮🇳

What is left today ? Watered down obligations for a very limited number of operators.

Actually, the EU slaughter regulation already applies to third countries exporting to the EU.

The #EUMercosur deal is toxic ❌

It will stimulate feedlots (which are already increasing) & intensive poultry production in South America 🐮🐔

The deal also allows partners to challenge ANY future legislation (even if legitimate) if it nullifies trade concessions in terms of business opportunities.

The new regime - revision of the trade agreement or new autonomous measures - must condition any trade liberalisation of animal based products to the *implementation* of EU #AnimalWelfare standards 🐔🥚

The modernisation of the #AnimalWelfare law is also the best opportunity we have to ensure that all products marketed on the EU comply with the same standards.

40 organisations call on the EU to ensure robust benchmarking under deforestation law The open letter calls on the European Commission to ensure that the country benchmarking under the EU Deforestation Law objectively reflects real human rights and environmental risks.

The #EUDR is necessary to ensure our consumption does not further contribute to deforestation.

But its effectiveness will depend on the bench-marking to determine if a country is low, standard or high-risk.
