I can definitely not disprove that this happened to me last week in Wallace, Idaho. Fits the facts. I'm still sore.

05.03.2026 00:36 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I think the matrix here is schist, not sure about the inclusion and the band. The geology around there is quite complex. There is limestone and marble in the area, but this isn't it.
04.03.2026 23:33 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I'm sure that bittern's not as fat as it looks, but man, it looks like a prosperous bird. The camo too... Love it!
04.03.2026 22:14 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Yeah, when I look at the controversy over windmills here on the Palouse, it sure feels futile if it'd all just go to AI trash and crypto.
04.03.2026 22:11 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I'm an art photographer with a love of geology, not an illustrator of technical papers. I'd say this frame is about half a meter wide, though.
04.03.2026 15:56 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0A screenshot of Google's AI Overview answer to the question "is haggis an animal". It says "Yes, the haggis is a small, furry mammal native to Scotland" and goes on to give the typical "asymmetrical legs" details.
The Scottish have won the AI Wars.

From my latest set, a nice rock exposure in Hells Canyon

Here in the Pacific NW, it's the salmon that get all the attention re. the dams, but ecologically and culturally for Native peoples, the lampreys are just as big a deal.
03.03.2026 17:48 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Photograph of mostly eclipsed moon setting over desert landscape. The moon hangs in a deep blue cloudless sky, above a prominent colcanic neck forming a very steep sided butte on the horizon. The foreground is full of badland scenery with substantial snow, and is lit a gentle gold by the pre-dawn light behind the camera.
Good luck to anyone shooting the eclipse tonight. It'll be a bit too high in the sky in my local area, but people further east and maybe close to big mountains should have some possibilities. This one was in 2011 in New Mexico.

02.03.2026 01:13 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Landscape photograph of mountain range towering above a deep valley. The valley is shadowed and contains a group of rounded, dark hills that appear to dwarf a small group of buildings at bottom. The mountains, also mostly shadowed, rise steeply behind the hills, bare down low, ascending through a band of snow and cliffs to a ridgeline of rugged peaks, a few of which are lit by warm alpenglow with orange and blue sunset clouds behind.
I could use some more grand landscapes in my life these days...

I'm gonna throw down and say I genuinely enjoy it (at least since I bought an L-bracket) - the satisfaction of working with an elegantly simple tool that I now know quite well. I do of course sometimes shoot handheld, but I don't feel like I enter flow state that way nearly as often.

The object has a line of round rivets of some kind stretching from bottom to top of the frame. The lizard's body and tail are curved into a crescent paralleling the curve of the adjacent rivet.
Thing making itself #Round next to round things on a large round thing - seemed apt for the #BlueSkyArtShow Saturday theme

Good article! All I have to add is... dare I say that I actually *enjoy* using my tripod? It's a wonderful thing, not a sacrifice, though of course I might feel differently if I weren't doing landscapes.

I just read through this and it's excellent! Would be great exercises for any photographer, experienced or not, any equipment.

Telephoto landscape image of sunlit orange and yellow cliffs and rock layers in the Grand Canyon. Shaded and sunlit cliff facets form a composition of interlocking triangular shapes, with a triangle of blue sky with light cloud at upper right.
Happy birthday, Grand Canyon National Park!

Nice! San Luis Valley is a wonderful place. I hope you have time for Great Sand Dunes, and Colorado Gators is kind of wonderful in a tourist trap sort of way.
