This month, but more importantly every month forward, Black history must be preserved, respected, and taught—never erased. Any law enforcement agency engaging in violent or unconstitutional policing practices must be held accountable for the harms they perpetrate.

Unsurprisingly, in 2026, we continue to see over-policing of Black communities, redlining, and mass incarceration of people of color. These are not isolated incidents, but deliberate attacks on Black communities and Black history.

Overwhelming evidence shows this approach has failed to create safety, instead perpetuating distrust, trauma, and the very cycles of crime it claims to solve.

For 60+ years, law enforcement's default response to crime in Black communities has been over-policing and over-incarceration, rather than community-based solutions.

Federal raids, deployed by the Trump administration to cities including D.C., Charlotte, and New York, are disproportionately targeting communities of color.

This #BlackHistoryMonth, we’re reflecting on the connections between Black cultural erasure, whistleblowing, and law enforcement accountability.

Featuring testimonies from expert witnesses and federal employees impacted by DOGE’s cuts, the hearing highlighted the importance of federal accountability mechanisms and whistleblowers in this historic moment.

McilRaith condemned the investigation that she and her colleagues were placed under: “Federal workers have the right to speak on issues of concern, just like every other American. This was a protected disclosure under the Whistleblower Protection Act of 1989, and the First Amendment.”

After McilRaith and other FEMA employees submitted a letter of dissent to Congress, they were promptly put on leave, in violation of federal whistleblower laws.
