Masabumi Hosono（細野正文，Hosono Masabumi; 15 October 1870 - 14 March 1939 ) was a Japanese civil servant. He survived the sinking of the Titanic on 15 April 1912 but found himself condemned and ostracized by the Japanese public, press, and government because of a misconception that he decided to save himself rather than go down with the ship. 2 Hosono's grandson is Haruomi Hosono, 31[4) leading member of the Japanese band Yellow Magic Orchestra.

Join us this Wednesday, October 15th for a screening of Piotr Szulkin's “Ga-Ga: Glory to the Heroes” (1986). This dystopian sci-fi/comedy follows Scope, a prisoner aboard a spaceship who is “volunteered” for a one-way mission to an uninhabited planet. Instead, he arrives on the unexpectedly Earth-like Australia 458, whose population declares Scope a “hero” and suspiciously encourages him to commit any crime or evil act he wants. However, Scope soon discovers the cost of his newfound glory and freedom – his own televised public execution. Can he outwit a sadistic society filled with demented characters and escape his fate? “Ga-Ga” is the final film in Szulkin's “apocalypse” tetralogy, all of which were produced and released (and occasionally banned) during communist Poland. Filled with dark, grotesque humor, neo-noir visuals, and surrealist allusions to both the Soviet system and Christianity, the satirical film explores free will, mass spectacle, and the value of human life under the callous cynicism of authoritarian rule.
