My grandma was a librarian. I would absolutely devour a buddy librarian story. Maybe an adventure where they get in over their heads tracking down a rare first edition for the archives?

I bought a used Nikon D700 from a wedding photographer nearly a decade ago and it came with the Sigma 50mm. I have an old Nikon pancake 50 f1.8. One of these days when money isn’t so tight I’d love to upgrade and expand a bit.

I’ve been doing my own sort of “cinema therapy” and going back and watching/rewatching films that I missed/dismissed. I’m really glad Barry Lyndon was very near the top of the list. I’ve doubled in age since my first viewing years ago, and I’m astonished how much my sensibilities have changed.

I love how restrained it is. It’s like picking up a large novel and knowing you’re in for a longer term, lush reading experience. I think that’s what I lacked, as a younger man, was the patience to submit myself to the slower pacing of a story like this. This time around, I was utterly captivated.

That has got to be the niftiest of fifties. My Sigma 50mm (f1.4) is my favorite lens. The shallow depth of field I can get with it is amazing. I can’t imagine the challenges of working with an aperture as wide as f0.7. Granted, Kubrick was working with candlelight, but exposure comp had to be tricky

That part is fairly mind blowing. I’m a sucker for natural lighting, but below f1 is insane. The shot that really floored me was when Lord Bullingdon shows up to demand satisfaction of Barry. The gamblers in the background are so still, they look indistinguishable from a period oil painting.

I finally watched #BarryLyndon for the first time where I wasn’t drunk or in my twenties, and no exaggeration, I think it might be my favorite movie. Ever. Slow, restrained, absolutely stunning pictorial stylization in the lighting, I can’t stop thinking about it. #movies #kubrick
