Iβm embarking on a new collaborative research project that deals with a part of the USA I havenβt studied much. #Skystorians , what are your favorite books and articles about #envhist , science, and technology in the Mountain West/PNW?
(This project is mostly about Idaho.)

What would I like to see? A strategic effort by academics in American Studies and so-called "Western civ" to submit an overwhelming number of applications to NEH that focus on issues related to race, ethnicity, marginality, sexuality, and everything else deemed "DEI" that are IN these exact fields.

JD Vance criticized an American-born Olympian who chose to represent China.
If he wanted to celebrate America, he could honor a Chinese dissident whose daughter won gold. He won't, b/c we are deporting refugees now, and Vance is just here for the immigrant-bashing.

Hey! Scholars! If you're using someone's work in your class, sometimes it's nice to email them and tell them, because then they might feel good about their research instead of entirely crushed by the academic humanities' ongoing descent into the grave

I remember when I had to convince my students that Charlemagne's political program of translatio imperii--pretending that he was reviving the legacy of ancient Rome in order to shore up his own power--has been a leitmotif of American imperialism since the 18C. Now I just have to point at a tweet.

Smartphone screenshot showing two New York Times βBreaking Newsβ push notifications. The first, at 5:38 AM, says Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office over links to Jeffrey Epstein, citing the BBC. The second, at 2:01 AM, says Yoon Suk Yeol, South Koreaβs ousted leader, was found guilty of leading an insurrection over his 2024 martial law decree. Each notification includes a βShareβ option and a bell icon.
Watching other countries actually make their leaders and powerful men face consequences with jealousy.

One of the things that personally drives me crazy in the U.S. is how youth sports/athletic activities went from a part of the public good (municipal leagues and fields! rec centers! public parks!) to a privatized, expensive, highly competitive, highly structured pursuit for wealthy kidsβ rΓ©sumΓ©s

Cover of "Inventing the Renaissance: Myths of a Golden Age" by Ada Palmer, which is bright orange with white text, and has a greyscale image of the statue of Perseus holding Medusa's head aloft, his sword passing through the letters of the word "the"
So lemme tell you about @adapalmer.bsky.social's Inventing the Renaissance, which came out last year and absolutely blew me away.
I'd replace half the 1st-year curriculum with this book.
Reading it made me a better historian, and also the kind of person who underlines books.
Plus, it's hilarious.
