Just a reminder of the deep humanist roots @tlecaque.bsky.social brings to his work. This is a good reminder to not lose sight of lived experience in our historical writing. Bravo Thomas!

Set aside time to watch this if your nervous system isn't spent. Sarah Chayes is a person we should be listening to as we fight to save the republic. On the other side, the same corrupt networks will be working to entrench themselves in whatever we build next & we have to know what that looks like.

"No stupid rules of engagement" is how you shoot down three of your own F-15s in one day. Just a shocking display of martial ineptitude.

Looks like Iran has decided on three types of targets: US military bases in the region (Bahrain & others), oil infrastructure (eastern Saudi Arabia) and, perhaps most escalatory of all, densely populated urban areas to maximise economic and political impact (Dubai).

Graph from NetBlocks showing network connectivity in Iran from February 24, 2026, to March 2, 2026. The y-axis represents normalized connectivity, ranging from 0% to 100%, and the x-axis represents the dates. The green line representing Iran's connectivity normal most of the time period, with a sharp drop on the morning of February 28. The drop in connectivity aligns with nation-scale internet blackout imposed during joint military strikes by the US and Israel. The minimum and current connectivity levels are indicated as 1% and 1%, respectively. The chart has a dark background with a red horizontal arrow labeled 'SHUTDOWN', indicates the period of disruption and includes the NetBlocks logo in the lower left corner.

⚠️ Update: #Iran's internet blackout has now surpassed 48 hours, leaving its population of 90 million out of touch as war spreads.

Shutdowns are a go-to tactic for the regime, with the previous instance in January lasting several weeks and masking severe human rights violations.

Rhetorically at least, Merz’s statements are a green light to Putin in Ukraine and to Trump himself in Greenland. They also consign the resounding success of the JCPOA, including Germany’s laudable participation in it, to the dustbin of history.

Iran's top national security official, Ali Larijani, announced that an interim committee would run the country until a successor to the ayatollah was chosen.
He also said that the death of the ayatollah would not deter Iran, which he said would hit Israeli and American targets "with a force they have never experienced before." The supreme leader was killed in his home office in the U.S.-Israeli attack on Saturday, Tasnim, the Iranian news agency, reported.

this policy is cruel and will make minimal difference to immigration numbers (as refugees are only a small % of overall immigrants, and most of them come from countries that aren't going to be safe any time soon [e.g. eritrea;afghanistan]).

It will actively harm integration and finding work.

This created fear and was an attack on our right to peacefully assemble.
