The first Young Investigator selected talk @ the #SLDSummit is pure basic science 😍

Erika Paolini used spatial transcriptomics to map the metabolic zonation of hepatocytes in MASLD, showing that PNPLA3 affects zonation by impairing periportal function

Cognitive load refers to how much working memory or short-term memory someone is using at a time. Minimizing the cognitive load it takes to use your site makes it more accessible for people with cognitive disabilities. Limit what you're asking users to remember to use your site.

Been masking up more often. Mostly due to having a disability & working near vulnerable patients.

Also: saw the CXRs below: complete whiteout from influenza A, H5N1.

I'm careful but not fearful right now, cases are mostly mild & mostly not person-to-person.

What are the origins of the gender gap in career advancement between men and women GI physicians and how can we remedy these disparities?

AGA President Dr. Maria Abreu addresses this in a new @aga-gastro.bsky.social commentary. https://buff.ly/3Po5mUP

When submitted by researchers, GI presentations are equally divided F:M.

When invited or industry supported, women are underrepresented. Compare the center chart to the other 2.

UEG and DSW are major conferences presenting cutting edge findings on gastroenterology.

Remembering pulmonologist, researcher, mentor Joe Sisson, MD Dr. Sisson was respected as 'the best of what it means to be a physician-scientist.'

Joe was one of the pillars of our college. As his colleague Dr. Wyatt put it, "He was my friend, and I loved him." Please read this tribute to our mentor, colleague, physician and friend, Dr. Joe Sisson. We will miss him. #pulmonary #cilia

At the risk of responding to a potentially rhetorical question, I have a thought.

Your guide dog is good because her motivation is to meet your expectations. Can you communicate the rules of the change you want, and rely on her already-present motivation?

Ableism looks like building a world that doesn’t consider people with disabilities, then blaming them for not fitting in. It's the constant belittling, the exclusion, the 'inspiration' label slapped on them for existing, and the refusal to make basic accommodations because it’s 'too much effort.

The disability community is the the largest minority group in the country and often the most ignored. It’s also the only minority group you can join at any time. You can become disabled and most likely will with age. To care about the disability community is to care about your inevitable future.

It is common to separate the Humanities from the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects. Today we look at how they can intersect and how one provides succor or inspiration to the other.

Best work life balance I've seen so far was my colleague who left academic research -> non-science career.

When someone with a #Disability shares a struggle,

Say this: "What is that like for you?"

Not that: "I struggle with that too. One time, I [insert something that is not even close]."

Totally get that you are trying to relate, but that invalidates the person's experience.

Practical advice to acknowledge that a person with a disability has a complex &personal experience. Not something that can be grasped in a moment.

Empathy without diminishing their lived experience.

Blindness is on a spectrum.

When someone says they are blind, ask β€œ How much vision do you have?”

This opens up the conversation and prevents it from being built on assumptions.
