This paper provides a foundation for the continued development of process-based models, such as SIMPLE, for additional opportunity crops and underscores the significant potential of these historically under-researched crops to support climate adaptation and a more food-secure future.

Yang & Guarin et al. expanded the modeling framework for 19 opportunity crops and calibrated and parameterized process-based models. Model performance was evaluated against existing data, demonstrating that the newly developed models accurately reproduce observed crop yields and climate responses.

Guarin & Yang et al. present a catalogue of African opportunity crop simulations to aid in identifying crops with strong agroclimatic resilience and regional relevance and call for a shift toward a more diversified and inclusive approach that leverages the benefits of opportunity crops.

Guarin & Yang et al. find that 10 of 19 opportunity crops increase in yield under both low and high emission scenarios, ranging from 2-16% by 2050. Teff and grass pea demonstrate the largest yield gains (16%), and roots and tubers are overall the most resilient crop type.

AgMIP played a key role in Phase 2 and completed a climate impacts assessment on opportunity crops. In a new Nature Plants paper, Guarin & Yang et al. provide mid-century yield change projections across Africa for 24 crops, including 19 opportunity crops, some being simulated for the first time.

The Vision for Adapted Crops and Soils (VACS) launched in Feb 2023 by the US State Dept in partnership with @africanunion.bsky.social, #AgMIP, @fao.org, and the African Orphan Crops Consortium. Phase 1 identified a list of nutritious and regionally relevant opportunity crops in five categories.

By improving the integration of nutrient dynamics and crop models, we also improve our understanding of how climate-driven changes will affect and influence the ability for global populations to receive essential nutrients from the food they consume.

The paper also highlights the limited availability of comprehensive datasets beyond staple crops and calls for collaborative research among climate scientists, farmers, crop modelers, plant biologists, and public health nutrition practitioners to safeguard nutrition under climate uncertainty.

Carducci & Guarin et al. highlight the importance of integrating nutrient dynamics into process-based crop models by using a new framework to better represent plant nutrient uptake from the soil, nutrient translocation across the plant, and eventual micronutrient concentration in edible products.

Workshop participants include experts from Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, and Zimbabwe. The Science-to-Policy workshop's outcomes are expected to have relevance for countries throughout Sub-Saharan Africa and beyond.
