The World War II Memorial in Washington DC has 56 granite pillars with bronze laurel wreaths representing U.S. states and territories in 1945 along with two small triumphal arches representing the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. An oval plaza and fountain stand between the pillars and arches. The memorial opened in 2004 and was initially designed by Friedrich St. Florian.
