My abusive dad loved to shoehorn in "reminders" of my *awfulness" into conversation. For example, he would force my mother to confirm random things I would say, claiming that he couldn't trust me. He did it to reinforce the notion that I'm "less than."

The biggest issue, I think, is the idea that you're losing a part of yourself. Because you aren't. You're simply a different person than you once were, and that person doesn't need that to write to feel whole. This doesn't make you "less than." It makes you human. Accept who you are now and move on.

I feel like the same thing is happening here. These stories? These characters? They aren't "you" anymore. That person who obsessed over them ceased to exist. The new you? They just aren't feeling the whole "writing" thing. That's fine. You might come back to it, you might not. That's how things go.

The topics in that story didn't intrigue me anymore because they didn't matter. I worked through everything and came out the other side. It wasn't "me" anymore.

But this queer as fuck new thing? That's who I am now. These topics matter now.

And that's why I abandoned an 18 year old labor of love.

I found myself pondering why. Why am I giving up a marketable, albeit niche, idea for what is essentially experimental furry erohorror? I can't publish this! It's way too weird!

Took me a bit, but I figured it out. "Westsylvania Tales" wasn't a "product." It was a glorified therapy session.

I attempted to start book 2 again at the beginning of the year, but something felt different. Off. The urgency I had never came back. It felt like a chore.

A few months later, I had a new concept come to me. Completely different. And I was all in. Writing finally became fun again.

All of that work paid off in October 2020, when I finished my first book. Lost my deals shortly thereafter (Covid), but it didn't matter. I wrote a fucking novel! Time for Book 2!

...But I didn't start book 2. I didn't write much of anything for five years. I simply stopped caring.

Let me tell you a story.

I first came up with "Westsylvania Tales" in 2007. My ex-wife and I were RP'ing on MSN, and I hit on something magical. Years worth of work went into this. Six planned books. Dozens of characters. Plotting, tweaking, workshopping. Over 400K words. Two small press deals.
