Michele Beckwith, the top federal prosecutor in Sacramento, was fired hours after she reminded a Border Patrol chief to abide by court-ordered restrictions on immigration raids.

Cruising crackdown in Penn Station bathroom puts at least 20 men in ICE custody State and city laws prohibit local police departments from turning people over to ICE. That restriction does not apply to the federally run Amtrak Police Department.

As of today, three immigration judges at Sacramento EOIR have been terminated. This is not unique to Sacramento or California. This is occurring nationwide in an attempt to pack the courts with political operatives who will blindly adhere to policy guidelines issued by the Trump administration, aimed at hurting our immigrant neighbors. Immigration proceedings are an opportunity for individuals to seek narrowly available forms of relief and establish why they should be allowed to remain in the country. These are lawful proceedings that the federal government is trying to circumvent by packing the courts with political operatives who will not fairly adjudicate these cases. As a reminder: immigration court proceedings are administrative hearings housed under the executive branch, are not shielded from the political whims of the Executive branch, and do not afford immigrants a high standard of due process. Immigrant respondents are more often than not forced to face the full weight of the United States government through its attorneys, alone without representation. They will now be entering immigration courtrooms and participating in hearings under the control and discretion of politically biased and motivated judges–odds completely against them. May this serve as a lesson to all those in positions of power: turning a blind eye to injustice will not shield you from the very source of repression. If you fail to preserve your values and dignity, your shame will echo beyond your termination and your work will be forgotten. We cannot believe in democracy and stand for nothing. We cannot believe in justice and sit in complicity. We cannot assert our humanity and turn our sight.

Speaking of voices under attack…can we be just as loud about Black journalists and comedians who are silenced, even by our so-called liberal outlets.

The shooters who fall into this mold implicitly understand these internet dynamics. They seek an audience, but they are also acting out to get the world—especially the online world—to respond. “If you read this you are gay lmao” is a trolly, nihilistic thing to inscribe on a bullet casing, but the point is for people to see it, for people like me to write it down so that people like you can read it and feel something, be it shock, outrage, confusion, or sadness. The shooters may not have a coherent ideology, or even be particularly politically motivated per se, but they seem to know the ecosystem they are dropping their horrific acts of violence into. For some shooters, online communities—with all their irony-poisoning, shitposting, and feuding—are more real, or at least more meaningful, than physical ones. With their senseless violence, these killers are bringing a part of that networked, online chaos to tangible, life-and-death reality. They know that their violence will be flattened, picked apart, argued over, and, crucially, amplified by the justification machine. In this way, they will get what they’re after. The violence will continue.

We can dunk on these posters all we want, but this is effective. Nostalgia is one of their most powerful propaganda tools, and they're tapping into generations of cultural touchstones with these.
