I recently moved my lab to Purdue University and am looking for graduate students. We are working at the interface of population genomics, quantitative genetics and functional genomics to understand how plants adapt to extreme environments. Reach out if you would like to discuss potential projects.

No enough about Bioscience in here, which is for some reason a major target of the Trump admin and DOGE. So much going on with sequencing technologies, health research and therapy development that feeds into non-academic sectors in the US.

Great to see someone in congress standing up for science. We need it on both sides of the aisle, but agree the R's probably have more power to make an impact currently. WaPo article is not open access. Seems to be the same content on Todd Young's website: www.young.senate.gov/newsroom/pre...

The Tragedy of the Worldโ€™s First Seed Bank Soviet geneticist Nikolai Vavilov led an ideologically perilous campaign to rid the world of famine.

Without seeds, we have no food. Without seeds, we have no future.

Botanists at Vavilov's seed vault chose to starve to death rather than eat the seeds they were protecting.

A lot of rich people don't want to admit that a big part of the United States' success in innovation is thanks to government funding & research, and maybe not purely because of their genius-level IQs & unique business acumen.

Michelle Beutler cleared 67 trees off a U.S. Forest Service road in two days. It was the spring of 2023, after a record-breaking winter in the Stanislaus National Forest in Californiaโ€™s Sierra Nevada. Beutler, 59, worked alone with a chain saw to remove every fallen tree on a 10-mile stretch of road between the town of Long Barn in Tuolumne County and the popular Hull Creek Campground. She single-handedly finished the work so the road could open in time for Memorial Day.

As a recreation technician based out of the Summit Ranger Station in the Stanislaus National Forest, Beutlerโ€™s job was to clean toilets, pick up trash and maintain recreation sites and campgrounds up and down Sonora Pass. Sheโ€™d typically drive her Forest Service truck 100 miles a day. She sprayed pit toilets with a fire hose. She wiped away graffiti and removed thousands of pounds of house trash, old furniture and useless stuff that people dumped in the forest. She extinguished hundreds of abandoned and illegal campfires. She assisted law enforcement during emergency accidents, helping officers navigate a swath of rugged forest land that she grew up on and knows intimately.
