The more I think about this, the more I crack up.

I'm simultaneously cramming 3 different franchises into my brain for potential new projects, and boy is it a jumble in there. What are the worst crossovers you can think of? Personally, I think Smurf Star Wars would probably break me.

I wasn't thinking "stick it to the man!" when I wrote Lucius--except maybe for the choice to subvert Lovecraft himself--but I also knew how it would be perceived. It's an odd dichotomy.

I absolutely agree with all of this. I mean, depending on how you look at it, existing in the world is political. The stories we choose to tell definitely have a worldview behind them... it's part of the reason that AI will never be able to do what we do.

It’s a weird, complicated topic, and I’m interested to hear your take. Is writing political by default?

Does that count as political? Probably. But should it? “Anyone can be a hero” should not be a controversial statement, but some people seem to have taken it that way.

I love an underdog, like the 60-something gay Black protagonist of Lucius Galloway or the medic hero at the heart of my Warhammer story, The Strength of Symbols. I love flawed protagonists who persevere despite their trauma, like Ghost Rider and the coven in Witches Unleashed.

On the surface, you’d probably say I write mostly fluff. I specialize in monsters, heroes who say something pithy before wading into fights, and things that blow up in slow motion. But I definitely write about the world I want to live in.

One review for my book The Forbidden Visions of Lucius Galloway has stuck with me ever since. It says, “Many book spaces have had this erroneous claim lately that reading isn’t political and a book like this perfectly highlights why YES IT VERY MUCH IS.”

Game-wise, I played and highly recommend Codenames: Duet for tabletop players and Citizen Sleeper for video gamers. Citizen Sleeper’s story is so good that it honestly makes me a little jealous.

I finally got around to watching the first season of Arcane, and all of you were right. It’s so so good. If you’ve been dragging your feet like I was, get on that.
