In short: the “new Right” mobilizes more young & discontented citizens. Socio-economic issues still dominate, but socio-cultural ones — especially immigration — are gaining traction.

Interestingly, as CH grows, its electorate shows signs of de-radicalization on democratic attitudes. On immigration, though, CH voters stand apart: far more negative, often linking immigration with crime. Yet paradoxically, they also support reducing inequality...

Comparing bases:
- CH & IL voters are younger than PSD’s
- CH voters: less educated, further right, more dissatisfied with democracy
- IL voters: higher education, attitudes closer to PSD

Who are these new right-wing voters? Traditionally: older, male, more religious, higher-educated. But since 2019 — and especially in 2024 — the Right attracted more young voters than the Left, for the first time in 20 years!

In 2019, IL and Chega participated in the election, but the relevant variables to measure ideological and affective polarisation (party placement on the left-right scale and party sympathy) did not include the two newcomer parties in the survey questionnaire yet. In 2024, PSD and CDS-PP ran together as AD, which is included for this year. Raw data as well as details on the calculations are in Table A3 in the Appendix.

We trace the evolution of the Portuguese Right from 2002 to 2024. The big story: fragmentation & polarization. The resurgence after 2022 is driven mainly by the rise of Chega (CH) and Iniciativa Liberal (IL). Right-wing voters now see sharper ideological and affective divides among their own parties
