Yes, twice. I've noticed that. A major reason is that the party establishment invariably torpedoes any progressive candidate who looks likely to win (and to be fair, he's not actually a Democrat). But Vermonters - the people who know him best - keep reelecting him.

It's worked well for Bernie Sanders for decades. Contrary to popular belief, Vermont outside of Burlington is not a far-left state. Rural Vermont is fairly conservative (in the traditional sense of the word), but they respect and trust Bernie because he's always taken clear and consistent stands.

$12/hr minimum wage? Twelve?! With the price of everything going through the roof? When "Fight for Fifteen" has been a popular slogan for a decade (though $15/hr was arguably not enough even when people started saying that)?! JFC.

OTOH, I think it's possible he's telling the truth when he says he didn't know what the tattoo was. See, I've lived in Maine, and that state:
* Is very, very white
* Has a very high percentage of people who've never lived anywhere else
* Has good K-12 education, but very few college graduates

Sigh. I would like to add one small thought about this tattoo scandal. Let me first say that I agree Platner is looking like a problematic candidate. I like his messaging, and it's past time to get rid of Susan Collins.

OK, that makes sense. And I went to the University of Oregon; at that time the state was less left-leaning than it is now, but the university was pretty well insulated from political pressure. The OP seems to imply that this happened at *all* universities, but the truth is more complex.
