I'm able to deal with it now, but a lot of it is curating my life to be tolerable. Often this involves asking people to make small compromises they might find hard to understand, like turning down the radio in a car, and the friends who are flexible for me with these things are absolutely golden.

If it sounds like an extreme reaction, just try to imagine being jabbed in your side by someone's finger repeatedly and how hard you'd have to work to not react. Yes, it seems to be a minority of us who react to certain sounds that way.

...is a great way to get someone's attention and make an ad memorable. It's also a great way to make me want to do murder. When I hear an ad with a jingle, I want to drop everything and hunt down whatever advertising businessperson decided to shove it in my ears and throw them in a lake of fire.

I can tolerate it, but I have to strongly suppress the urge to get as far away as possible.

I have completely banned ad plays from my life. I never listen to legacy media with ads and I have adblock on everything. Advertisers figured out that having someone whistling a jingle in an ad...

Another trigger was whistling.

One of the adults in my life would whistle at me to get my attention and not matter how much I expressed that it bothered me, they just wouldn't change.
To this day, it is extremely irritating to hear someone whistling.

So the problem was always put onto me and my reactions, as if I could and should just choose to stop being bothered by what I was bothered by. Expressing my distress didn't work, didn't change anything, because why was I acting so weird about normal stuff? I should just stop being that way.

As an adult, I have way more regulation and things have mellowed out and it's less of an issue, but when I was a kid, my responses to these things were treated as me being unreasonable, frustrating, rude. It'd be seen as exasperating of me to ask them to stop eating chips or nuts in the car, etc.

For me, hearing mouth sounds, especially lip/tongue/chewing sounds, especially in isolation and in certain contexts, provoked a similar response in me to being poked in the side repeatedly. If you start jabbing my side with your finger, it's not only annoying, it's very hard not to physically react.

People don't get what it's like to have neurodivergent sensory processing and the world isn't built for it.

When I was growing up, my misophonia was really bad. The best way I can convey it is that for most people, hearing an annoying sound is annoying, but seems easy to not react to.

I'm hearing word now that Techsane from WaterWolf was in attendance at NFC this evening, waited until Howell (who runs competing club PHC and who oversaw a Google Doc calling WaterWolf out) came off stage and confronted him, ambushing him with highly aggressive questions and refusing to back down.
