Pragmatically, there seem to be 3 ways it can go; there exists a difference of degrees between automatic and deliberate processes (signal strength, persistence etc.), there exists a difference of kinds (a unique structure or mechanism present in one case), or there exists a mysterious prime mover.

The preprint does more justice than the thread to the current state of affairs but this strange framing of deflation when it comes to explanations seems to be a bit motivated by romanticism to me.
