Shell to permanently close all of its hydrogen refuelling stations for cars in California Oil major cites โ€˜supply complications and other external market factorsโ€™ in decision to exit market for light-duty H2 vehicles in the US

For example, Shell closed its HFCV business in California. www.hydrogeninsight.com/transport/sh...

And as you note, the situation is worse if you use H2 as a fuel in an internal combustion engine.

As a result it takes 3-5x more energy to do the same work with a HFCV as with a BEV. That is why BEVs are expanding worldwide while HFCVs are not.

Fuel cells have efficiency of 30-60% for electrical generation. In contrast, an electric motor has efficiency of >90%. Add to this that the H2 molecule holds less energy than the H2O from which it is obtained, and that the H2 must be compressed and transported for use.

The GOP would like that, but I think the irony is that the market will prevail.

The future will be electric. Fossil fuels and hydrogen are not cost competitive for transportation relative to renewable-powered BEVs.

Hydrogen heavy truck sales in China show a pattern of stalling growth followed by early signs of decline in 2025. Registration data and industry reports indicate that fuel cell heavy trucks were less than 1% of the heavy truck market in 2024, amounting to low single digit thousands of vehicles, and most of these were tied to provincial demonstration subsidies rather than broad fleet adoption. In the first half of 2025 the number of registered hydrogen trucks rose slightly on paper, but analysts inside China noted that real world operation rates were low and that several local programs were winding down as subsidies tightened. At the same time battery electric heavy trucks climbed from 13% of new sales in 2024 to 22% in early 2025.

Sales of diesel trucks in China have plummeted, from 1.5M per year before to ~0.5M in 2025, replaced by gasoline (~0.3M per year in 2025) and more recently by a growing number of BEV (~0.3M per year in 2025) trucks.

Annual sales data in China show that their trucking fleet is shifting from diesel to gas and BEV, which provides cost, environmental & climate advantages. ๐Ÿงช๐Ÿ”Œ๐Ÿ’กโ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿ”‹

Chinaโ€™s BEV Trucks and the End of Dieselโ€™s Dominance - CleanTechnica Chinaโ€™s electric heavy truck boom signals a freight transition as low cost BEVs outpace diesel and gas across short haul markets. Exports are rising.

Thereโ€™s lots of interesting detail in this article. But the gist is that Chinese short & medium haul BEV trucks beat western ones on cost even after regulatory upgrades. Long haul versions are cost competitive. ๐Ÿงช๐Ÿ”Œ๐Ÿ’กโ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿ”‹ ๐Ÿงต cleantechnica.com/2025/11/26/c...
