It completely escaped my mind, but yeah, he absolutely will reuse those AI assets for the next game that features the Touhou 20 cast, huh...

This stain on the franchise gets to follow it even into the future.

Really fucking disappointing to discover on some idle Thursday morning that a Touhou artist you liked the art of has been drawing their art solely for the purposes of throwing it into the AI slopmation machine to animate it for some stupid AI Gensokyo game.

So AI is

- A zero-profit money sinkhole
- Slowing down workers who have to keep fixing its hallucinations
- Filling the internet with lies and deception
- Fighting creativity
- Ruining the customer tech market
- Killing open source software
- Destroying education

But for some reason we "need" it?

highly doubt any of this is true for the record. they said the same thing about UK and Australian age verification and i know people in their forties who discord couldn't infer were of age. don't buy it

But if his research was thorough, as it should have been, he should have found out about them, and he should have reconsidered right then.

But this thread is starting to turn into more speculation, less facts, so I think it's time for me to stop posting in it.

Well, judging by his "don't come after me if it turns out something I generated with Adobe's clean AI came from stolen material" joke?/statement?, he evidently *did* know about the ethical dangers, but he never said anything publicly about the environmental dangers.

Like, what the fuck happened, the man wrote about how Gensokyo can be expressed as a p-brane in Dr. Latency's Freak Report, so he clearly did research about that topic at some point in his life, so why didn't he do the same level of research that I know he's capable of for genAI???

I cannot fathom that he stopped researching AI right before the part where he learned that it's not only an ethical danger, but an environmental one, it just doesn't make any sense to me.

The man busts out his science research cap almost every time he writes a Hifuu story, for fuck's sake!

But here in 2024-2025(assuming Touhou 20 development started in 2024), I am *far less* forgiving, people at this point have been talking *for years* about the dangers of genAI, and with someone like ZUN who seemingly did his research on whatever he wrote a Touhou story about...

I'd maybe be a little less pissed off about it if this happened back in 2019, when AI Dungeon was brand new, and most? of us were blind to the pure evil masquerading as the funny little toy that dynamically writes the text adventure story for us based on what we type.

Like, to give some examples, Hokkai(Touhou 12) is a modified stock background, but what he *did* to it *made* it Hokkai.

The Saigyou Ayakashi is a modified stock photo of some dead or bare tree somewhere, but what he *did* to it *made* it the Saigyou Ayakashi.

The funny thing is that he *did* do the backgrounds for the other 19 games he made(other than some usage of genAI in Touhou 19 for Zanmu's Spell Card(s), verdict is still out on whether that was an accident or not), sometimes he'd use stock photos he edited, sometimes he'd make 3D backgrounds.

Oh, and, though I don't know if he *still* does this, but he was for a while, regularly using ChatGPT for shit in his day to day life, so I'm not sure I entirely believe him anyway when he goes "AI is bad, actually", even if the words he says are correct when he does.

To me, personally, any time he opens his mouth about AI and how bad it is, it just rings hollow now, even if what he says is correct.

After Touhou 20's release, after making all the excuses for using the slop machine, he suddenly changed his tune in interviews, saying AI is bad, actually.

He *claims* he won't use it for music creation or writing or character design, any of the things that are apparently *not* "boring" and "uncreative" to him.

He stated that he "only" used it for the creation of backgrounds, what he called the "boring" and "uncreative" parts of game development, which left a particularly nasty taste in my mouth, personally, as someone who understands how important backgrounds are to a video game's visual identity.

He made many excuses for why he *had* to use it, from "AI is just a tool, I will never lose to a tool", without realizing that using it means he loses in the creative department(in my opinion), to "My kids are going to grow up with it, so I should learn how to use it to show them how".

There's literally a fan mod for Touhou 20 that removes all the AI, and *wow, look at that*, the commentary is still there, the message that AI tools like that fucking suck is still there, but now, it's without using the fucking planet killing plagiarism slop machine.

Why would I listen to a guy who went against the creative spirit and used AI to generate backgrounds for him? What, because he used it to do a commentary? He didn't need it to do the commentary, he could have faked it and still did the commentary, the clone stamp is right fucking there!

So, like, when ZUN opens his mouth about any part of his creative process in video game development in an attempt to impart wisdom to the masses, his words become hollow, and I stop paying attention, because it's all empty and meaningless coming from him now.
