Who have you got from New Yorkโs largest retiree association, @nycretirees.bsky.social ? No one whoโs fighting to preserve the health benefits promised to 250,000 retired city workers? Thatโs what I thought.

If he truly cared about seniors, he would have promised the cityโs largest retiree organization, @nycretirees.bsky.social that heโd preserve municipal retiree health benefitsโbut he never did. Weโre not just cute old people.

The real buzz killer is that he has failed to engage with the senior activists fighting to keep their health benefits. Senior centers are all well & good, but heโs ignoring an issue that, as mayor, he would control. @nycretirees.bsky.social

Itโs sad that 4 years ago, when the City of NY and, disgracefully, our former unions tried to force 250,000 municipal retirees off Medicare into a for-profit plan, only lawsuits filed by @nycretirees.bsky.social stopped them. Now our fate lies entirely with the next mayor & hereโs how things stand:

Hereโs hoping tomorrowโs NYC mayoral debate will ask the candidates if they promise to preserve municipal retireesโ traditional Medicare. Will they support a bill to ensure this? @katiehonan.bsky.social @errollouis.bsky.social @thebrianlehrershow.bsky.social @nycretirees.bsky.social

It depends on what condition youโre in. Letโs stop generalizing. Itโs ageist.

You can choose not to take seriously @nycretirees.bsky.social, but if this group hadnโt sued the City of NY, my spouse & I each would have been paying nearly $200/mo. for our now-free retiree health benefits for the past 3 years. Still, we need a bill passed & Mamdani wonโt commit his support.

Home - Retired Labor Strong
I thought you were referring to a different post. See the political website of @nycretirees.bsky.social which is retiredlaborstrong.nyc and go to the โOur Candidates โ tab. Itโs for the primary but it explains. Also he reneged on participating in the groupโs mayoral debate.

Zohran Mamdani may say he believes in Medicare for All, but in NYC he declines to support the 250,000 municipal retirees fighting to preserve the traditional Medicare they were promised & not be forced into Medicare โAdvantage.โ

The Justice for Seniors sign in that photo is pretty rich. Mamdani has not committed to stopping the city of NYโin collaboration with a union that endorsed himโfrom forcing 250,000 city retirees off Medicare & into an inferior private plan. He wonโt even meet with retirees resisting this.

Some Zohran supporter who claimed that every worker in a Harlem coffee shop was wearing a Zohran pin. I canโt find it now.

But those of us who make coffee at home (to save $) are not, because he has done nothing to support the 250,000 municipal retirees who are fighting to preserve our health benefits. He declined to take part in the mayoral forum hosted by @nycretirees.bsky.social and he has been silent on our issue.

Medicare is for people 65+ and the disabled. Medicaid is for low income people. Why do you think Medicaid cuts affect only โgrandmaโ or seniors?

This is a sad moment for the American labor movement and an attack on democracy as well as on our hard-earned health benefits.

I used to freelance for it and respected it, but that was a long time ago. They finally corrected that โpermanent citizenโ bit and acknowledged it at the end of the article, but they didnโt thank me, as they sometimes do.

Okay. They made the correction, changing โpermanent citizenโ to โpermanent residentโ and noted it at the end of the piece. I wrote to 3 different Times desks before this happened. Reflects the fluffy tone of the piece. They want us to love him, not just recognize his rights.

I think @nytimes.com can defend Mahmoud Khalilโs rights without running a softball feature with this error, which I pointed out but is still there: โMs. Abdalla hurried up to their apartment to get her husbandโs green card. She reminded the officers that he was a permanent citizen.โ
