I think about Cameron's quote all too frequently.

"The future is just another crappy version of the present. It's some bribe people offer you to make you do what they want instead of what you want."

The TikTok Ban Paradox: How Platform Restrictions Create What They Aim to Prevent | TechPolicy.Press Alex Turvy and Dr. Rebecca Scharlach write that the US TikTok ban reveals the limitations of current government regulatory paradigms.

Great reading about the TikTok ban paradox from @alexturvy.bsky.social & @rscarlets.bsky.social for @techpolicypress.bsky.social.

"..bans displace, rather than resolve, governance challenges, pushing users toward more opaque and potentially riskier ecosystems."

What happens when the internet disappears? Huge swaths of the web are vanishing. What does that do to our culture?

I've been thinking a lot about how relaxed M&A oversight will transform our digital infrastructure.

@sesmith.bsky.social's brilliant essay digs into web decay and LLM data sets, and questions how comfortable we are with the loss of a significant amount of culture.

The influence of legacy outlets is still real but it's long past time to start referring to popular YouTubers, podcasters, and newsletter writers as mainstream.

One of the more disingenuous arguments about Bluesky vs. Threads is comparing total user growth.

Yes, Threads added as many new users in recent weeks as Bluesky has total users. But it's an argument rooted in yesterday's success metrics. Platform size doesn't mean a platform is better/more useful.

As video content becomes a larger part of Spotify's strategy it'll be important to watch how the platform promotes independent podcasters who elect to produce video vs. those who stick to audio-only.

As Spotify continues to build an all-in-one creator ecosystem with monetization features the platform will compete with podcast hosts like Acast, which allows podcasters to monetize with a minimum of 2,000 downloads per month.

Very few podcasters will be able to reach 10K streamed hours in 30 days.

Spotify for Creators will launch with a suite of new video features, expanding the platform's offerings beyond just podcasts and video podcasts. Its incentive structure is clear:

β€’ Highly engaged shows & audiences will earn more money.
β€’ Creators are incentivized to publish on a regular basis.

Spotify yesterday announced Spotify for Podcasters is set to become Spotify for Creators. To be eligible to join its Partner Program, creators will need to meet the following benchmarks...

β€’ 12 total episodes
β€’ 2,000 unique Spotify users and 10,000 streamed hours in the previous 30 days.

Garbage Day writer Ryan Broderick writes, "I’ve found myself fretting over β€œthe literacy wall,” a moment at some point in the future where enough people who grew up on a text-based web have died off and taken with them any memory of enjoying reading and writing posts online. A little dramatic, sure, but it’s definitely clarified for me how important it is to not just replace what people remember about Twitter, but also find ways to evolve the entire concept into something that can survive against the tide of 90-second video clips. Could Bluesky be that future? Well, now they have 15 million users who might be able to figure it out."

Read today's Garbage Day by @ryanhatesthis.bsky.social for a great piece about why Bluesky is the new Twitter – and the importance of maintaining and evolving a text-based social media platform.

Bluesky's trajectory is still being determined. It's building trust with people due to its T&S policies and transparency about its monetization goals. Will everything be perfect? Of course not. But communication helps people feel safe. And, thus, people are more willing to build here.

For better or worse, Threads is not designed for real-time news engagement. It's also tied to Meta's existing structure. People are tied to their Instagram accounts (if they have one) and all of the associated baggage of the platform.

As @blunderchief.bsky.social writes for @theverge.com, Threads is still outpacing Bluesky.

But Bluesky feels more lively due to its algorithms and, I'd argue, benefits from being a totally novel digital space.

Other findings:

β–Ί 72% of podcast listeners are between 18-54 years old.* There is an even 36% split between 18-34 and 35-54 year olds.
β–Ί There are *many* new podcast listeners: 56% of respondents have listened to podcasts for less than two years.

*The median age of a cable TV viewer is 64.6(!)

Podcasting will continue to grow in influence as the medium reaches more people in the US and beyond.

For the first time ever, more than half (53%) of Americans reported listening to at least one podcast in the last 30 days, according to Sounds Profitable.

I’ve been fascinated and deeply appreciate Joshua’s analysis.

Is this the tipping point for Bluesky?
