thank you

05.10.2025 23:34 โ ๐ 8 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0we get the opposite of that with the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie suits (made by Jim Henson's Creature Shop) looking pretty great on screen, but have deteriorated beyond repair because they were made to look good on screen.
time's gonna march on regardless, but please not during my life
a good example of treating the final product as the point of the work is that recently bluesky-viral photo of a Calvin and Hobbes original that is just as much white paint as it is ink. The white doesnโt get photocopied, so we see Watterson not mind the mistakes
05.10.2025 23:11 โ ๐ 8 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0a concept drawing of the Muppet Show logo sign, with Kermit the Frog sitting in the enlarged opening of the letter O in โshowโ
โstoryboardsโ for the intro of The Muppet Show, drawn on lined yellow paper. The sequence of drawings is timed with the lyrics of the intro song, ending with Gonzo hitting a gong. The intention from the start would be Gonzo doing various things to cap off the intro, as the final caption is โmany different Gonzosโ
the real actual physical logo sign used for The Muppet Show. Itโs smaller in person, but big enough for a Kermit the Frog to comfortably sit in the enlarged opening of the letter O in โshowโ
a closeup of the sign. It is scuffed and covered in paint and marker retouches, just close enough to the original colors to look good at a distance
something I flip flop between liking and loathing about entertainment is the impermanence of items that go into the production of the work, because the final product is the art.
The logo looked fine on the camera with marker fixing the line work, so you get to see the imperfect humanity in person.
Jim Henson was out there DRAWING, dude
05.10.2025 22:08 โ ๐ 14 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0some Dark Crystal concept art that kicked ass

05.10.2025 21:41 โ ๐ 18 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I could easily kick a Skeksisโ ass, but I donโt know if I would be able to handle the consequences of my actions. I can dodge roll, I could take a Garthim in a fight,
but two?
I was actually under the impression that I was going to be seeing more than just the one Skeksis, but what I saw really was incredible. So much of the outfit is intricate and ornate but also grounded. It feels like something I could make if I put the patience and time into it
05.10.2025 21:33 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0seeing a Skeksis, and then concept art of a Skeksis was like seeing an angel
05.10.2025 21:00 โ ๐ 29 ๐ 2 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0The small pebble that would tumble down the hill to make the avalanche that is Kermit
05.10.2025 20:25 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0a conceptual drawing of Scred, from an adult-focused Saturday Night Life skit headed by Jim Henson: The Land of Gorch. Looking like a plucked vulture, Scred has as distinct odor of primordial Skeksis to him
the puppet of Scred, essentially a felt, foam, and fabric version of the concept art. Again, a very primordial Skeksis
thereโs something about seeing concept art next to the physical thing made from that concept art is inspiring, and I wish it was more common
05.10.2025 20:18 โ ๐ 36 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0They had some plastic figures? toys? concept carvings? But no puppets of that specific version of Kermit
05.10.2025 20:08 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Storyboards for an old Wilkins Coffee ad that Jim Henson worked on
Concept art for Statler and Waldorf
concept art for the Swedish Chef
concept art for Dr. Teeth, looking much more rotund than his usual lanky self
seeing the muppets in person was definitely incredible. Seeing their fuzzy textures closer than I ever had before, being reminded theyโre real and crafted by hand, was inspiring.
but seeing their concept art and storyboards, might have been a religious moment.
I think in most screen appearances, theyโre Frank Ozโs hands
