Alphabetically first, then each album by that artist is sorted chronologically.

I don’t really get why we use surname for a solo artist, it’s not consistent with using first letter of first word for bands / groups. Maybe I’m secretly Japanese?

Plus my Iron Maiden albums are out of order because I bought a lot of them in a box set where the spine artwork makes a picture - and for some reason (it’s probably unofficial) they’re not at all in the right order!

The John Mellencamp one is a conundrum for sure! I also try to order chronologically by artist but I have to make some small sacrifices. Neil Young albums are in year order, but I don’t count “and crazy horse” or whoever else as separate…

I organise my CDs by first name.

Bob Dylan is under B
Neil Young is under N

With the exception of artists that start with ‘The’ (which I ignore and file under the letter of the next word) I have achieved alphabetical purity.

Isn’t sorting by surnames just a throw back to a more formal era?
