It actually hurts a LOT, at least for me.

Luckily, mine went away in about a day and a half, and I managed to avoid being upright for more time than was necessary.

But I did not realise that my abdomen was actually swollen from the *surgery* not just the gas.

Until you get it all out, it stays in your abdominal cavity, and when you are upright, lodges under your diaphragm, irritating it and causing referred pain via the phrenic nerve to the shoulder, usually on the right side because of how the diaphragm is shaped.

With laparoscopic surgery the surgeon makes a few incisions (four, in my case, for this surgery), and then your abdomen is inflated with CO2 so they can see whatever it is they happen to be surgering. Afterward, the CO2 is absorbed by your body, and you burp or fart it out like any other gas.
