The key challenge is striking the right balance between PRIVACY and UTILITY.

❌ Complexity of implementation: Implementing differential privacy correctly requires deep expertise in data privacy and security. Mistakes in implementation can lead to either over-protection (useless data) or under-protection (privacy leaks).

❌ Accuracy vs. Privacy trade-off: Adding “noise” to data to ensure privacy reduces the accuracy of results. The stronger the privacy guarantee (lower ε value), the more noise is required, which can degrade the usefulness of the data for analytics and machine learning.

✅ Strong theoretical guarantees: DP uses mathematically rigorous frameworks to protect individual data points in large datasets.

✅ Regulatory and Compliance alignment: DP aligns well with emerging data protection laws and privacy-by-design principles.

✅ Minimal exposure: “Noise” injection masks personal details while still allowing for generalized insights.

Differential privacy (DP) is a powerful framework for preserving user privacy in data analysis, but it comes with several trade-offs and downsides.
