Image of the poem by N.W. Hicks as it appears on page 44 of Molecule Issue 12. Poet’s name is in a banner at the top of the page followed by the poem titled Trying to Escape You:

The willow drank all my whiskey.
While I tangled in her arms,
the water overturned the canoe.
In the morning, the mud was the shape of our bodies,
and the water rubbing against the shore
was the sound of us
breathing our names into the shale.

Super excited to have a little poem in Molecule’s Issue 12! Available here moleculetinylitmag.art.blog. The process of containing a poem to 50 words or less was such a fun exercise & I’m so honored to have had one of my attempts selected.

So frustrating! I suppose it’s only the nature of the process. The theme rattles around in your brain during selection, plants a seed, and before you realize it, it has grown into something worth harvesting.

It’s comforting to know I’m not alone in this. My sincerest apologies for dredging up your nightmares though!

The sweet joy of untangling. I am very acquainted. There are some beautiful poems in those tangents you find at the crossroads of a piece. Usually not what you’re looking for but just what you need.

I can’t say I’ve ever started from a title! I should probably challenge myself one of these days.

Guess I shouldn’t be very surprised, after a few days of seeing it everywhere, that the anglerfish story inspired a new poem. Not altogether unhappy with it, so I’ll call that a win.

Did you know you can make up little guys and put them in situations? Yeah, experts are calling it "writing," it's incredible stuff. Highly recommend. :)

My new favorite pastime is submitting to a theme issue and then writing a new poem a week later that is on theme and arguably better than anything I submitted.

The unparalleled joy of finding that word or line that brings a poem back together when you had almost given up on it.
