π₯³ The summer conference season of 2025 is starting for us next week!
If you attend the NetSci Conference in Maastricht, Netherlands, join our talks to see the exciting work we do at the NetIn lab.
A list of presentations per day:
These findings address questions in social psychology:
π· How multidimensional identities drive connection preferences?
π· How these preferences impact inequality?
π· What patterns emerge when identity attributes correlate?#SocialNetworks #Inequality #Intersectionality
In Paper 2, we show:
π· Attribute correlations (e.g., gender & race) create unexpected inequalities unobservable in one-dimensional systems.
π· Minority overlap leads to severe disadvantages in some cases.
π· Our model accurately predicts inequalities in real-world networks.
But there's more! Multidimensional identities also impact social capital inequalities.
π· Paper 2: "Intersectional inequalities in social networks"
π·
Highlights:
π· Modeled how we combine identity info (e.g., gender, ethnicity) when choosing friends.
π· Found that people are picky choosers and use the simplest strategy to integrate preferences.
π· Identify quantitatively the most relevant dimensions in connection choices.
But if we belong to multiple groups?
π·Our network model to explores multidimensional identity-driven interactions. π· Paper 1: "The hidden architecture of connections" π·
π· New research alert! π·
How do our multidimensional identities shape who we connect with and the inequalities that emerge in our social networks?
π·1/ Social categories (race, gender, and socio-economic status) drive our connection preferences.
Promotional image for the science fiction book 'Planets of Disparity: The Hidden Divide' by Liuhuaying Yang, presented by Complexity Science Hub and NetIn. The right side displays the book cover, featuring cats and dogs in a futuristic setting, gazing at planets in a cosmic background. The left side features text describing the book: 'In a parallel universe where planets are home to cats and dogs, an annual awards ceremony celebrates the most esteemed inhabitants. Liz, an engineer, uncovers strange anomalies in the selection process, drawing her into a web of deceit. Special investigators Luna and Max join her quest as they discover that the algorithm governing the rankings may hold the key to chaos across the cosmos. What role does this algorithm play in the fate of interplanetary fairness?'
Excited to share our colleague Liuhuaying Yang's sci-fi book inspired by our research on inequality in ranking systems! A creative take on how the rich-get-richer effect & homophily shape visibility. A must-read for all curious minds! Order on Amazon: amzn.eu/d/cyMLz4V
