The entire business model of R1 public universities rests on 4 revenue sources:

1. Federal grants
2. Private gifts/endowments
3. Tuition (esp. from foreign students)
4. State $

For decades, 📈 in 1-3 offset a secular 📉 in 4. Now, 1 & 3 are being decimated & 4 ain't coming back. The math is clear.

What I would like to remind everyone talking about Sam Altman talking about the “PhD level intelligence” of the new ChatGPT is that Sam Altman dropped out of college so he… has no experiential construct for what grad school even is.

@damon.kiesow.net I’m intrigued by this part of what you wrote. I’d love to see this mapped according to the size and resources (and probably a few other characteristics). Would be interested to work with you or someone else on this for the smallest orgs.

We’ve stayed away from anything in crypto. But I wonder if things will creep in without us knowing.

Yes, I want to contact our 401k plan for TNC and find out.

very curious if anyone has any answers. it's so hard to figure this out. i rolled over half of my retirement into ethical funds several years ago and it was a costly fiasco. so much of that stuff is only targeted at super rich people or ... it still invests in icky stuff anyway!

So... how do we try to make sure our 401k funds aren't put into private equity, real estate, cryptocurrency and other alternative assets. Any personal finance folks out there who can comment?

"Thanks mom for swim lessons" warms my ❤️. As a parent who has to coax our kids to do things they don't want to do all the time, I feel this sentiment deep in my bones.

Substack's extremist ecosystem is flourishing Yup, they're still at it.

When I left Substack in 2024 I wrote: "For those who are staying because they think the Nazi problem is fake or overblown...just wait. Substack mgmt just put out the welcome mat for some pretty horrible people. Many will surely answer.”

Surprise! A bunch did.

After months of hard work we’re thrilled to announce that COYOTE Media Collective will launch Sept. 15th 🚀

THANK YOU for believing in us and supporting this dream of a new, worker-owned Bay Area publication 💫

We're nearly at our $150k goal! Can you help us close the gap? givebutter.com/coyotemedia

We are definitely thinking about this for our kids, especially since they are interested in the sciences. We're several years out from this, but the destruction of American higher education will have long lasting effects.

If you asked any of the tech bros if they want their kids to experience college this way, they would all say no.

Jurors blame Tesla for fatal Florida Keys crash, award victims $242 million The driver ran a stop sign at the end of Card Sound Road at 62 miles per hour, well above the 45-mph speed limit, while reaching down to the car’s floor in search of his dropped cellphone.

Tesla on autopilot slams into parked car, killing one, seriously injuring another.

Jury awards $242.6 million in damages vs the company.

(The Tesla driver was speeding, and searching for his phone on the floor, right before the crash.)

I'm increasingly of the opinion that DC should be given statehood and the area around the Capitol (you know where the Capitol police patrol) should be what DC is now.

Pretty sure she's been selling out the city to business interests for awhile now, with the biggest corporate giveaway to billionaires in the city's history.

Thanks, @brianneknadeau.bsky.social for trying to stick up for the city and its residents. That is real leadership. Too bad a majority wanted to sell us out to billionaires. We appreciate you.

Thank you, @cmfrumin.bsky.social, for sticking up for our city. This is real leadership. I’m sad that a majority sold us out. Also, thanks for coming to listen to the residents of #KingmanPark. It means a lot that you showed up.

I’m really disappointed, council member. These changes aren’t enough. We feel like we’ve been sold out to put more $$ in the pocket of billionaires. What protection is there for homeowners who will be directly and negatively affected by this development? The people lost today.

Bad for the city. Great for billionaires. We need new leadership in DC.
