We drank tea in the overgrown garden where my uncle's old farm equipment rusted and sank into the earth

Somehow when I turned 30 I began to feel very young. I get flashes of how it'll feel to be 66, 71, 87, looking back to myself at this age

At the time, I was reading The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin, and fell upon a line that described exactly what I was feeling

Every summer my family and I return to the motherland - the west of Ireland. In 2022, thanks to the drought, its usual deep green was singed slightly brown

Me and my aunties sprang - collected - my Great Auntie Nellie from her convent in Dublin, and drove west

We stopped briefly in Tipperary Town to stand outside the house my mother and her sisters grew up in in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Suddenly they're bursting with memories: "This was my favourite step! My throne!" "I saw Thin Lizzy play in that church hall in 1969!" "That's Basil's house, where Basil lived. He made the town gravestones"

Further west again, we visit a living part of that old Ireland. The farm where the last stalwarts of my grandmother's generation live. [Great Uncle Ned, 84, Great Auntie Nellie, 90, Great Auntie Bernie, 89, sit chatting, hunched in chairs]

i hate the game politicians play where they back israel 100% until it starts killing too many people too fast, then they start calling for peace until the killing slows to levels acceptable for them. they're not opposing genocide, they're negotiating how quickly it should proceed
