“I love you.” It’s still shocking to hear, even if its not the first time he has said it. He had said it many times last night in his flat, on his couch and in his bed. He had said it several times this morning when they had woken up together. He had said it when he told her he was going to cancel his trip and stay home for Christmas. He, however, had not said it when Penelope told him he should still go on his trip. When he had demanded to know why she was pushing him away. How she must not feel the same way he did. How she was going to make him spend a miserable Christmas traveling instead of being with her. She took it all, knowing that perhaps she was being a little unfair, a little vindictive for all the time she had spent pining after him and how he thought it would just be so easy now that he loved her.

But she knew deep down, she needed time. It could never be as easy for her as it was for him. She had spent year after year, Christmas after Christmas pining for him and if she gave in, she would lose herself in him. She needed time to figure everything out and she needed some separation from him. Time to figure out if this was truly what she wanted or if she had spent so long wanting him that she simply felt like he’s what she should want. She needed him to leave and then know he would come back and they would both feel the same.
