It was lovely. “We do still have Night Island,” Armand reminded him. “You do, in fact.” “Yeah, that still falls in the ‘pause’ category, babe.” (Babe. Daniel calls him ‘babe’ again. It feels… it feels more like coming home than anything Armand has ever felt, with the exception of holding Daniel in his arms again, when he thought he never would; kissing him again; making love to him again; having his voice narrate a commentary to his life again.) “And besides,” Daniel went on that night, curling his hands around a cup of warm blood, shifting a little in a way that betrayed his nerves. “I’m a Boomer New Yorker—” “You’re from California.” “—and it’s basically Florida, so I figured we’d move there when I, uh, retire.” Armand tipped his head. “Retire?” “Yeah, I was trying to make it a euphemism for staging my death, but I guess it didn’t land. In my defence, I’m only halfway through my first mug.” He tapped the ceramic (custom-designed to say Do feed the gremlin after midnight) with a claw. “So yeah, I figured we could move back in once I bow out. And for now, we could, you know. Get a new place of our own.”

Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing? 2? Questions I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up. Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
