Wester Hailes Growing Communities

I think this sums up our session this morning in the Greenway Garden. Out with the frost hardy crew and joined by some of our perennial crew who prefer the extra warmth and light. Very happy to see Tom back for a visit, even with broken leg. A joyful morning. ☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️

Busy making things, apple tree pruning, fruit shrub love, tying in Loganberries, weeding and then hanging out with Wester Hailes High School students, who helped care for the wormery, tried to navigate the garden with their eyes shut using a stick, and tried out some fitness challenges.

Gave the hedge some more love today, tidying up around the Greenway Garden and a new surprise project for the garden from Ricky.

Tanks all connected and filling in. Calders Greenshoots this morning. Should have 8000 litres of harvested rainwater as we move into growing season. Potting bench ready for action too. We’ve got through a lot of tasks this winter thanks to two of our amazing volunteers, Ricky and Taff. 🙌🙌

Busy giving the Greenway Garden hedge a bit of care, building things from pallet wood, watering the polytunnel as the plants sense the extra daylight, with new growth evident. Plenty of old nests in evidence around the wildlife hedge which is great to see. 😁

Lots of wee bits completed today with the crew in Calders Greenshoots Garden. Guttering sorted👌sink siliconed in, beds getting fixed, water tanks will be finished on Saturday, and we added some decent door handles to both sheds. Finally a sunny session ☀️☀️☀️☀️

Only the brave and daft today at the Greenway Garden. Worms are doing great so gave them some more food to munch on. Maryse busy pruning and Ricky & Taff cleaning and tidying. Brr 🥶

First Minister opening new medical facility in Wester Hailes The First Minister, John Swinney, is to open a new GP walk-in clinic in Wester Hailes on Wednesday. Patients will be able to access GP-led same day care without an appointment, making it easier for them to access urgent medical attention. The care will be provided by a GP or an Advanced Nurse Practitioner. The Scottish Government has committed £36 million in a pilot programme to be rolled out in the coming months.

Calders today - An appropriate day/week to add some rain harvesting guttering to the new system. Rain or sun we’re winning now 👌harvesting everything we can. 👍

Last week in the Calders garden we got the tool washing sink functional again 👍 potting bench almost done.

We have an official new address in Wester Hailes. :)

Satisfying morning in Calders Greenshoots garden finishing off the solar system wiring and getting it operational. 👌 Very grateful to the @edinburghcouncil.bsky.social community grant fund for the small grant to enable this project. Team effort from Ricky, Taff, Brian, and Darren. 🙏 Appreciated.

And plenty of coffee drinking of course.

Minging weather in the Greenway Garden, hanging out with Benny the blackbird, feeding the worms, tidying the tool shed, apple tree pruning, fridge cleaned, and spotted some very early grape hyacinth flowers.

Good shift this morning in the Calders Greenshoots garden. Thanks to Ricky, Brian and Darren 🙏 we’ll get the solar system operational on Tuesday. 👍

The Redwings have returned to the trees above the Greenway Garden again and are enjoying what’s left of the sea buckthorn berries. Our worms are doing well in their new home too.

Lots of fun with Wester Hailes High School students this afternoon. Together we gritted the greenway path and bridge over the canal to make it safer for the older folks getting to Michael’s and the bus stops. Also for the Canal View pupils.

Good to be back with the hardy troops at the Greenway garden this morning. Tidying the sheds, the garden, and we gritted the local paths near the garden and Michael’s shop.

Spent the last Greenway Garden session of the year with our crew, volunteers, new volunteers, WHHS students, out talking with everyone we could about the plans for the new playpark & community micro hub. Busy year ahead. Thanks to everyone who’s helped, encouraged, & supported everyone this year. 🙏🏻

Last session in the Calders Greenshoots garden for the year. Good progress being made on the solar harvesting fit out. More improvements to come when we start back in the new year. 👍
