Farm workers. The fields on the field. The legacies of slavery and colonialismβ€”the sugar cane plantation, labor power, power crisisβ€”despite it all, the future reaches through the tv to the past to make our postcolonial present.

January Inquiries

Is it cold where you are?

Snow shurs off the roof and thunders to the pavement/and I am so cold I wear a hat in the house/I could turn up the heat but I'm being responsible/the first snow of the year/salt trucks overzealous in their sowing/crystals stuck in my shoes/the dog's paws/the snow wet and heavy/though not deep/thirty minutes was all it took to clear the driveway/without your help/and the sky has been so gray for days now/that I'm convinced the sun is dead/or at least in hiding/and if it doesn't show up soon/I may cry/it is winter/and you are not here

Do I miss you?

I wonder sometimes/does your body miss my body/when it's not next to yours/do you talk to the air when I'm not there/is my absence/a princess pea/a wooden splinter/a stone in your shoe/an itch you can't reach/or is it a Wile E Coyote shaped hole/an empty chair/a car stuck in the ditch/after sliding on the ice/off kilter and unable to move forward/and there, that's more proof that winter is here/ice imagery comes too easily/my Midwestern heart has always been filled with that cold/when you are not here

When will you be home?

Eight days isn't a long time/but with you gone/I feel myself collapsing like a black hole, burrowing into myself until I become pinprick/silent scream/incapable introvert/and I know I will see you soon/the space your body takes up in the house/in my hearm in my head refilled/and I am punch-drunk/honeysuckled/waiting to see you/because it is winter/and the sky is scribbled leac smeared charcoal/and you/ you will be my sun/my spark/my lantern/my warm warm light
