February in the Bay Area is possibly my favorite month. It’s stunningly green, chilly (for here), lush, clean and gorgeous.

Still too expensive to live in, and too far from the mountains but I’ll enjoy it while I can.

We’re going Back to the Future bb.

Did R2R in May a few years back, fell so deeply in love with it went back and did the R3 in the fall.

I’ve done a bunch of other trails there, been back every year since then.

Amazing place.

I am missing the mountains today. That is all.

Yep, the setting sun for about a week is perfectly lined up with Horsetail falls, an ephemeral fall near El Cap.

So if you have some snow at the top and days warm enough to melt it, and a clear view to the west for the sunlight to hit it, the water gets that red color from the setting sun.

Yeah I don’t think we’ll ever see the manmade one again.

The natural one really is something to see though, it’s with the hassle and likely misses.

You need a few things to line up for Yosemite’s firefalls:

Decent snowpack in a relatively small drainage basin

Clear skies at sunset to the west

It took me a few years of trying to see one, but it paid off eventually.

I don’t think we have enough snow this year for much if any of a show.

Running up Temelpa trail as the sun starts to crack the cloud deck is one of my favorite ways to start a day. The route up from Mill Valley to the top of Mount Tam is a classic.

I could have sat here for hours watching the fog roll through.

Sunrise on Mt Tamalpais requires me to wake up about 2.5 hours before sunrise to drive and run up Temelpa trail to the summit. So that was a 4am start today, but on days like this it’s easily worth it.
